Book excerpt: Featuring studio shots and a new interview between Jonas Wood and Tamarind master printer Ed Hamilton, Jonas Wood: Prints 2 provides an insightful view of the acclaimed artist’s collaborative printmaking process. Following the 2018 release of Jonas Wood: Prints, Jonas Wood: Prints 2 documents Jonas Wood’s dynamic printmaking output from 2018 to 2022 and reproduces more than thirty limited-edition prints created during this period. The selection of prints showcases some of Wood’s most familiar subjects: domestic interiors, sports imagery, botany, and still lifes inspired by his wife Shio Kusaka’s ceramic pieces. From verdant moonlit gardens to peaceful living spaces, Wood depicts everyday scenes and objects with a striking vibrancy born out of collaboration with expert printmakers. In accordance with Wood’s personal emphasis on artistic collaboration, the catalog is organized into sections representing various printshops he has worked with—including Cirrus Gallery and Cirrus Editions Ltd., Counter Editions, Hamilton Press, Mixografia, Pace Editions Inc., and WKS Editions. The catalog also includes photography of Wood’s prints in progress and a conversation between Wood and master printer Ed Hamilton in which they discuss the evolution of printing practices and Wood’s creative influences. Jonas Wood (b. 1977, Boston) lives and works in Los Angeles. He is known for his boldly colored paintings, drawings, and prints that combine art historical references with images of the objects, people, and spaces that comprise the fabric of his life. In 2016, he was commissioned to create an expansive mural, Still Life with Two Owls, for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. His work is held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Book excerpt: Alone Street brings together two major bodies of work by Gregory Crewdson, Cathedral of the Pines (Aperture, 2016) and An Eclipse of Moths (Aperture, 2020), in a single, elegant, and affordable monograph. Both series expand on the artist's obsessive exploration of the psychogeography of small-town, post-industrial New England and underscore the precision and depth of Crewdson's unique mode of photographic storytelling. In each image, light, color, and carefully crafted scenography evoke the feeling that, as art historian Alexander Nemerov has astutely described, "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long-gone who once stood on those spots." In addition to the full set of images from each series, Alone Street, presents a selection of behind-the-scenes images and storyboards, revealing the extensive preparation and planning that went into the making of each work.

Book excerpt: In this thematic monograph, Wood explores his longstanding fascination with intimate interiors, such as the houses he grew up in, his studio and other spaces of his everyday life. Wood renders these interiors with a disorientating combination of scrupulous exactitude and absolute flatness. Interiors offers a kind of self-portrait of the artist, exploring the arrangement of his living and work quarters and his various possessions as they recur throughout the book.

Book excerpt: This catalog serves as a fully illustrated look into the world of artists Jonas Wood and Shio Kusaka, published in conjunction with the artists’ debut exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, Hong Kong. Both Kusaka’s porcelain vessels and Wood’s drawn and painted interiors are depicted within this new book in vibrant color plates and photographs. Wood and Kusaka draw from each other’s work as painter and potter to probe the tensions between representation and expression, precision and chance, and influences from art history and life. An insightful new text by art critic Chris Wiley accompanies color images of Wood and Kusaka at their shared studio on Blackwelder Street in Los Angeles, where they work alongside one another to create works that draw from personal memory and their shared existence as a married couple. This book was produced with Karma, NY.

Book excerpt: Since 2007, Los Angeles artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) has been sketching Greek, Oceanic and African vessels at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. His relationship with the Met began as a child accompanying his sisters and parents, and when he began to make regular visits to New York from L.A. in 2007, he resumed his relationship with the museum, acquiring the habit of sketching the Met's ceramic holdings using a ballpoint pen on hotel stationary. Following each of these visits, Wood then created large-scale versions of the drawings in his studio back in L.A., reworking them in charcoal or pencil on paper. A History of the Metis the first installment in the artist's multi-volume homage to the Met, a project that accords with his well-known visual diary style and his fondness for portraying objects and places related to friends and family.

Crown Point Press is known for presenting social and political issues in a range of printmaking media, from hard- and soft-ground etching to drypoint, aquatint, and mezzotint. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco acquired the Crown Point Press archive in 1991. This collection of nearly 800 works contains one impression of every print the Press has ever produced. Also included are over 2000 working proofs and preparatory sketches. Now, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has organized an exhibition of these distinctive prints. Chronicling Crown Point Press's dedication to artistic quality and commitment to innovation in printmaking technique and subject matter, this book also presents Kathan Brown's notable contributions in transforming the printmaking landscape of the twentieth century. Book excerpt: Whiteread's sculpture is predicated on casting procedures, and the traces left on the sacrificial objects and spaces from which the final inverse form is derived. She casts from everyday objects as well as from the space beneath or around furniture and architecture, using single materials such as rubber, dental plaster, and resin to record every nuance. 'Detached 1', 'Detached 2', and 'Detached 3' (2012) render the empty interior of a garden shed in concrete and steel. Cast from generic wooden sheds, the large-scale sculptures render negative space into solid form, and the prosaic into something fantastically disquieting. The sheds recall the monolithic architectural and site-specific works for which Whiteread first became renowned, such as 'Ghost' (1990) and 'House' (1993) and, most recently, the imposing concrete sculpture 'Boathouse' (2010), installed on the water's edge in the remote Nordic landscape of Røykenviken.0Exhibition: Gagosian Gallery, London, UK (11.4.-25.5.2013).

Book excerpt: Contemporary painter Jonas Wood's exuberantly colorful portraits: an uncanny blend of realism and abstraction The latest book from Los Angeles-based artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) follows the style of his previous publications Sports Book and Interiors, this time taking up the subject of portraiture. Portraits compiles the many works completed over Wood's career, done in a variety of media, and with a range of subjects and sitters, including paintings of artist friends, self-portraits, intimate familial moments in domestic interiors and the artist's own cultural and sports heroes, from basketball players and boxers to Philip Guston and Pablo Picasso--though Wood's esteem for these figures is beside the point, as he notes: "I don't depict only those athletes who have meaning for me. Sometimes it is about the images being interesting, or that I like the color of the card, and sometimes it is about loving the athlete." Wood's subjects are presented in bright light with lively color, graphic flatness and minute detail rendered impeccably. Jonas Woods: Portraits reveals an intimate look at the life of an artist at the forefront of contemporary painting.

Book excerpt: This vibrant monograph marks the first major survey of Jonas Wood's printmaking. Jonas Wood is inspired by the domestic worlds of plants and household objects, vases, flowers, and basketballs. Through these familiar objects, Wood explores art historical modes such as perspective and abstraction. Tracing the evolution of Wood's unique visual vocabulary through his printing practice, this catalogue reveals his understanding of line, shape, and color, and how that allows him to seamlessly transpose the vividness of his paintings into print. In more than fifty limited edition prints produced between 2004 and 2018, Wood explores visual themes such as museum interiors, tennis courts, logos, and ceramics; effectively examining the immediacy of everyday life while referencing art history and several of art's most accomplished practitioners, including Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, and Ed Ruscha. The prints--produced in the print studios of Cirrus Editions Ltd., Counter Editions, Hamilton Press, Wavelength Press, and more--also attest to the importance of collaboration in Wood's work.
