Book excerpt: Read with Me is a series of reading books designed to develop the confidence of young children between the ages of 5 and 7. Using well-known Bible stories, the entertaining texts complement the child's more formal learning. Current developments in reading, writing and speaking guide the text and are behind the range of activities at the end of each book. Many of the stories are told in rhyme, and others have rhythmic, rhyming sections. In each book certain phrases are repeated to encourage the less confident reader. The text is positioned on pale colors to help dyslexic readers. The newly commissioned child-friendly illustrations complement the text, reinforcing the humor found in it. At the end of each book a range of activities encourages the child to think about what they have read, retell it in their own words, and talk about it.

Book excerpt: Pursue Me! provides an illustrated version of The Book of Jonah as seen through an artist eyes, and gives a thumbnail guide through these passages. The book contains seventy two works contemporize the Book of Jonah through symbolic storytelling, bringing a fresh interpretation to scriptures with this series of images. Ms. Breitenberg has illustrated scripture for four decades. While serving with the UN in Bosnia in the mid-nineties, she developed a concern for individuals from different cultures, and sought to find an artistic style appropriate to convey her spiritual journey to an audience with limited exposure to contemporary Christian images. The form of a mandala, representing the universe, was chosen an appropriate structure for spiritual contemplation for a new audience. As a result, the works give an appearance of dream interpretations while stylistically incorporating kaleidoscopes and stained glass windows, respectively representing change and holiness. They are a composite of images old and new, broken and whole, destroyed and restored, and replace diminished and distained with delighted and desired. Ms. Brietenberg's works have been exhibited in Europe and throughout the United States, including Museum of Biblical Art in Manhattan, Yale University and Washington National Cathedral. They are also included in the permanent collections of Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas, Catholic University and Convergence Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Her art was reviewed in the New York Times and appeared on Commonweal Magazines cover. Ms. Brietenberg seeks to broaden the appeal of contemporary Christian art to a wider and diversified audience and present it in a radical and provoking manner. She lives in Northern Virginia, as do her two children and three grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A top Old Testament theologian known for his accessible and provocative writing probes what is necessary to understand and appropriate the Hebrew Bible as a fundamental resource for Christian theology and life today. This volume offers a creative example of theological interpretation, modeling a way of doing Old Testament theology that takes seriously both the nature of the biblical text as ancient text and also the questions and difficulties that arise as believers read this text in a contemporary context. Walter Moberly offers an in-depth study of key Old Testament passages, highlighting enduring existential issues in the Hebrew Bible and discussing Jewish readings alongside Christian readings. The volume is representative of the content of Israel's Scripture rather than comprehensive, yet it discusses most of the major topics of Old Testament theology. Moberly demonstrates a Christian approach to reading and appropriating the Old Testament that holds together the priorities of both scholarship and faith.

Book excerpt: With his critically acclaimed Among the Missing and Fitting Ends, award-winning author Dan Chaon proved himself a master of the short story form. He is a writer, observes the Chicago Tribune, who can “convincingly squeeze whole lives into a mere twenty pages or so.” Now Chaon marshals his notable talents in his much-anticipated debut novel. You Remind Me of Me begins with a series of separate incidents: In 1977, a little boy is savagely attacked by his mother’s pet Doberman; in 1997 another little boy disappears from his grandmother’s backyard on a sunny summer morning; in 1966, a pregnant teenager admits herself to a maternity home, with the intention of giving her child up for adoption; in 1991, a young man drifts toward a career as a drug dealer, even as he hopes for something better. With penetrating insight and a deep devotion to his characters, Dan Chaon explores the secret connections that irrevocably link them. In the process he examines questions of identity, fate, and circumstance: Why do we become the people that we become? How do we end up stuck in lives that we never wanted? And can we change the course of what seems inevitable? In language that is both unflinching and exquisite, Chaon moves deftly between the past and the present in the small-town prairie Midwest and shows us the extraordinary lives of “ordinary” people.
