Book excerpt: Description The story is about four blokes attending a therapy group headed by a doctor with the intention of helping them towards a normal and fulfilled life. In the group the men discuss their problems using the language of poetry while the doctor speaks in proverbs and clich s.There is a similar scenario in the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest, but I personally have never attended such a group. My inspiration came from an assertiveness course I attended after recovering from a relapse while my confidence was low. The class consisted of six or seven others in similar situations and together we played out scenarios to help with dealing with aggression.I learnt from the course there's no such thing as being under or over assertive, your either assertive or your not. About the AuthorRickie was born in Aldershot in 1978, the son of a Grenadier Guard, he then lived in various places before putting down roots in Nottingham in 1991. He was admitted to hospital in the summer of 1999 whilst in the throws of his first psychotic episode. He spent a week in hospital following a year as a recluse on his parents sofa. Thanks to a change in medication and good friends and family Rickie managed to obtain a job as a pot washer, this brought routine and stability. Unfortunately after 6 months he experienced a relapse bringing 10 weeks off work sick and a diagnosis of schizophrenia. He then stayed well for over 4 years whilst working various jobs and spending some spare-time working voluntarily for the NHS on the mental health befriending scheme. In 2005 Rickie had another relapse resulting with a few weeks in hospital but was back at work within 6 weeks due to finances, but mentally was still trying to recover from the episode in 1999. Rickie uses poetry to express problems he feels he needs to articulate but it's his wife and son that keep him taking his pills and enjoying life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time, into the news burst accounts of regular people who commit crimes that seem totally out of character according to those who know them well. Lee Malvo, one of the D.C. snipers, was known to his friends and family as a smart, promising man. Steven, was a talented, young scientist with no criminal record. No one suspected he was capable of injuring another-until he was arrested for abducting a man, handcuffing him, and threatening to blow off his head with a pistol. What makes these otherwise stable and respected men and women commit crimes? Why do those who know them best not see the signs? Are there clues people can look out for when a person is about to snap? What in the psychological makeup of defendants resulted in their committing crimes? Here, a seasoned forensic psychologist delves into the psyches of these otherwise normal people, whom he has treated and researched for many years. With first-hand experience interviewing and treating such offenders, Samenow is able to offer numerous case examples of everyday people committing extraordinary crimes. He reveals the significant clues that help to unmask these criminals and the seemingly mundane aspects of their daily lives. The way a person handles money, consumption of alcohol, sexual history, marital conflicts, job history and performance, interests and hobbies, reading preferences, ambitions and goals, and reactions to frustrations all contribute to the factors leading up to the criminal act. By probing into these and other aspects of the offenders' lives, the author finds a context for the crimes they commit. He concludes that the out of character crime does not exist, that the crime is merely the outer manifestation of what lies beneath the surface. By taking readers through the steps necessary to understand these criminals, the author shows how we can all read the signs before it is too late. He uses real life examples in every chapter to illustrate his points and readers will come away with a better understanding of how these criminals operate.

Some of the stories he recalls herein are so hilarious they'll have you alternately laughing out loud and swearing they could never have happened. But they did. One thing is for sure: you will never regard law enforcement the same way again.

Book excerpt: This book, by a well established author previously writing in a quite different genre, that of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and counselling, is written for an entirely different readership. Patrick Casement has put together a fascinating account of his strange journey from a privileged background, through schools and national service, and then through university, avoiding throughout the wishes of his family for him to join the Royal Navy. Instead, he leaves university with a degree but heads straight into becoming a bricklayer's mate. From there, eventually, he gets through the vicissitudes of probation and social work, and the hilarious experiences of trying to furnish his first flat. He thus moves into what he describes as the "real" world - getting what his family would regard as a "real job" (or two). But despite that, he continues on his unpredictable journey - into becoming a psychotherapist and then a psychoanalyst: what his mother thought was "training to become a psychotic." This book is filled with laughter - that of the author laughing at himself as he invites the reader to laugh along with him in his journey through the vicissitudes of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun, frightening, and fascinating deep dive into the psyche of a madman: Batman’s nemesis, the Clown Prince of Crime. Since he first fought Batman in 1940, The Joker has evolved into one of popular culture's most complex and confounding psychological creations: both a criminal mastermind and an unhinged psychopath. In The Joker Psychology: Evil Clowns and the Women Who Love Them, Dr. Travis Langley, author of the bestselling Batman and Psychology, returns to Gotham City to explore the twisted psyche of this great supervillain, as well as the personalities who are inexorably drawn to it. Paying special attention to the strange dynamics of relationships like the one between The Joker and Harley Quinn, this collection includes some very special interviews with people who brought The Joker and Harley Quinn to life in comics and onscreen, and analyzes: · Why a bright, laughing monster who looks like a clown could be the ultimate antagonist to a grim, brooding hero who looks like a monster · The relationship between a therapist and her patient—and what happens when a therapist crosses the line, as Harley Quinn does when she falls for The Joker · How a smart person could fall for the most dangerous of criminals · Why so many fans find Harley Quinn inspirational · How different kinds of therapy could (or could not) help twisted minds like Mister J and Harley Quinn The development of a fictional character that so completely embodies psychopathy (including interviews with creators who have shaped The Joker’s character over the years), and more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Remaking of the Courts: Less-Adversarial Practice and the Constitutional Role of the Judiciary in Australia centres on the changing nature of courts within the Australian constitutional context. In essence, the monograph explores the degree to which less-adversarial innovations and the remodelling of the judicial role can be accommodated within Australia’s constitutional framework. The work draws upon comparative principles, separation of powers, jurisprudence and the theoretical perspectives of constitutionalism and neo-institutionalism. By examining Chapter III of the Commonwealth Constitution, and applying Chapter III approaches to less-adversarial case-studies traversing state and federal fields, the book argues that less-adversarial judicial practices can be broadly accommodated by the Australian constitutional framework. However, the book asserts that the clarity and suitability of the Chapter III constitutional approaches employed would be significantly improved by the adoption of a ‘contextual incompatibility’ methodology which would protect the constitutional role of the courts while not forestalling constitutionally compatible reform.

Book excerpt: On the night of September 15, 1956, a seven-year-old child was murdered on the deserted grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto. The main suspect was a teenage boy seen near the crime scene on a bicycle. Toronto police arrested Ron Moffatt, a fourteen-year-old former CNE employee who vaguely fit the description of the suspect. During a tough interrogation, Ron falsely confessed and was convicted at trial. In truth, Ron couldn’t ride a bicycle and was innocent; his phony admission was the product of fear and pressure tactics. The real culprit — sex offender and serial killer Peter Woodcock — remained at large, preying on new victims. This shocking story has eerie parallels to the Steven Truscott case (which also involved a fourteen-year-old Ontario boy accused of murder) but has been largely forgotten until now. A powerful account about a coerced confession, a fumbled police investigation and the crusading lawyer who fought to free Ron from custody.
