Book excerpt: This plan provides a seven year perspective of the initial transition from the use of current simulations to the Joint Simulation System (JSIMS) for computer assisted exercises (CAX). Over time, JSIMS will replace the training simulations that comprise the Joint Training Confederation (JTC), Joint Tactical Simulation (JTS), Joint Conflict Model (JCM), and Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS). JSIMS will also replace the Joint Conflict and Tactical Simulation (JCATS), the upgraded High Level Architecture (HLA) version of the Portable Space Model (PSM), and the Analysis Mobility Platform (AMP). JCATS is an interim simulation under development that will be HLA compliant at its IOC, 1 Mar 1998. It will incorporate the functionality of JTS and JCM, and fill a gap until JSIMS FOC. The criteria for the replacement of a current simulation is when JSIMS meets or exceeds the capabilities of a given training simulation system. Current DoD simulations may require a waiver or conversion to HLA compliance in accordance with the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology modeling and simulation guidance.

Book excerpt: This Operational Requirements Document supports the Mission Needs Statement for the Joint Simulation System (JSIMS). The requirements described in this document follow criteria established by CJCSI 3500. OlA, Joint Training Policy for the Armed Forces of the United States, 1 July 1997, regarding modeling and simulation (M & S) support to joint training. In accordance with that criteria, JSIMS shall be used by unified commands, other joint organizations, and the Services for the following activities: training, education, developing doctrine and tactics, formulating and assessing operational plans, and assessing warfighting situations. The Universal Joint Task List (UJTL) and accompanying Service Task Lists (STLs) provide the common language and reference system to communicate mission requirements among the above activities. A detailed discussion of how JSIMS will be used within the UJTL framework to support the Joint Training System (JTS) is found in The JSIMS Concept of Operations. The requirements presented in this document, therefore, use language and concepts consistent with the UJTL and JTS. During the course of JSIMS fielding, the integration and development (I & D) contractor will provide or arrange software support and maintenance. The I & D contractor must also develop and implement a plan for post-deployment software support and maintenance.

This plan describes some of the accomplishments achieved by the program in Fiscal Year (FY) 1997 and outlines the major strategies and milestones we expect to achieve over the next two years. The overriding goal of the program is to exploit HPC technology for military advantage across battlespace. The strategy to achieve this goal is to acquire and sustain world class high performance computing and network capabilities for use by defense scientists and engineers.

On the other hand, as emerging technologies, Soft Computing paradigms consisting of complementary elements of Fuzzy Logic, Neural Computing and Evolutionary Computation are viewed as the most promising methods towards intelligent robotic systems. Due to their strong learning and cognitive ability and good tolerance of uncertainty and imprecision, Soft Computing techniques have found wide application in the area of intelligent control of robotic systems.
