Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of the use of compound words in Old English poetry, homilies, and philosophy, Joinings explores the effect of compounds on style, pace, clarity, and genre in Anglo-Saxon vernacular literature. Jonathan Davis-Secord demonstrates how compounds affect the pacing of passages in Beowulf, creating slow-motion narrative at moments of significant violence; how their structural complexity gives rhetorical emphasis to phrases in the homilies of Wulfstan; and how they help to mix quotidian and elevated diction in Cynewulf’s Juliana and the Old English translations of Boethius. His work demonstrates that compound words were the epitome of Anglo-Saxon vernacular verbal art, combining grammar, style, and culture in a manner unlike any other feature of Old English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces modern ergodic theory. It emphasizes a new approach that relies on the technique of joining two (or more) dynamical systems. This approach has proved to be fruitful in many recent works, and this is the first time that the entire theory is presented from a joining perspective. Another new feature of the book is the presentation of basic definitions of ergodic theory in terms of the Koopman unitary representation associated with a dynamical system and the invariant mean on matrix coefficients, which exists for any acting groups, amenable or not. Accordingly, the first part of the book treats the ergodic theory for an action of an arbitrary countable group. The second part, which deals with entropy theory, is confined (for the sake of simplicity) to the classical case of a single measure-preserving transformation on a Lebesgue probability space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ergodic theory is a field that is stimulating on its own, and also in its interactions with other branches of mathematics and science. In recent years, the interchanges with harmonic analysis have been especially noticeable and productive. This book contains survey papers describing the relationship of ergodic theory with convergence, rigidity theory and the theory of joinings. These papers present the background of each area of interaction, the most outstanding results and promising lines of research. They should form perfect starting points for anyone beginning research in one of these areas. Thirteen related research papers describe the work; several treat questions arising from the Furstenberg multiple recurrence theory, while the remainder deal with convergence and a variety of other topics in dynamics.

Book excerpt: The publication of the first English translation of Martin Heidegger's Beiträge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis) marked a significant event for Heidegger studies. Considered by scholars to be his most important work after Being and Time, Contributions to Philosophy (From Enowning) elaborates what Heidegger calls "being-historical-thinking," a project in which he undertakes to reshape what it means both to think and to be. Contributions is an indispensable book for scholars and students of Heidegger, but it is also one of his most difficult because of its aphoristic style and unusual language. In this Companion 14 eminent Heidegger scholars share strategies for reading and understanding this challenging work. Overall approaches for becoming familiar with Heidegger's unique language and thinking are included, along with detailed readings of key sections of the work. Experienced readers and those coming to the text for the first time will find the Companion an invaluable guide to this pivotal text in Heidegger's philosophical corpus.

Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of theworkshop on recent developments in ergodic theory and dynamical systemson March 2011and March 2012 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Thearticles in this volume cover several aspects of vibrant research in ergodic theory and dynamical systems. It contains contributions to Teichmuller dynamics, interval exchange transformations, continued fractions, return times averages, Furstenberg Fractals, fractal geometry of non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes, convergence along the sequence of squares, adic and horocycle flows, and topological flows. These contributions illustrate the connections between ergodic theory and dynamical systems, number theory, harmonic analysis, probability, andalgebra. Two surveys are included which give a nice introduction for interested young or senior researcher to some active research areas. Overall this volume provides a very useful blend of techniques and methods as well as directions of research on general convergence phenomena in ergodic theory and dynamical systems.

Book excerpt: This is an interesting and well-written account of the ergodic theory of stationary processes from the viewpoint of entropy theory. This book is a beautiful and very readable treatment of an important part of ergodic theory. ... strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ergodic theory, stochastic processes or information theory. --Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society This book is about finite-alphabet stationary processes, which are important in physics, engineering, and data compression. The focus is on the combinatorial properties of typical finite sample paths drawn from a stationary, ergodic process. A primary goal, only partially realized, is to develop a theory based directly on sample path arguments with minimal appeals to the probability formalism. A secondary goal is to give a careful presentation of the many models for stationary finite-alphabet processes that have been developed in probability theory, ergodic theory, and information theory. The book has many attractive features for both students and researchers. An emphasis is placed on recent combinatorial results for sample paths. There are careful treatments of many models that have been found to be useful in engineering. Shields covers applications of entropy ideas to coding, sample path structure, distribution estimation, recurrence times, waiting times, and prefix trees.
