Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Joined- up government' is a key theme of modern government. The Labour government, first elected in 1997, decided that intractable problems such as social exclusion, drug addiction and crime could not be resolved by any single department of government. Instead, such problems had to be made the object of a concerted attack using all the arms of government - central and local government and public agencies, as well as the private and voluntary sectors. This book seeks to analyse 'joined-up government', to consider its history, and to evaluate its consequences for British institutions such as the Cabinet, the civil service and local authorities. Is joined-up government a new idea, or merely a new label for a very old idea? What lessons can be learnt from previous attempts at joined-up government? How does it affect our traditional constitutional conceptions relating to Cabinet government, a politically neutral and non-partisan civil service, and an independent system of local government? Will it lead to the concentration of power in 10 Downing Street or is it compatible with a political system based on checks and balances? Drawing together papers given at a conference held at the British Academy, Joined-Up Government provides a broad overview of one of the most significant aspects in modern government. Its contributors include not only distinguished academics, but also those who have themselves been engaged as practitioners in developing joined-up programmes. This book will be indispensable to all those who seek to understand how new developments in government are affecting our lives.

Book excerpt: Debates about the identity of school history and about the nature and purpose of the learning that does, can and should take place in history classrooms continue in many countries around the world. At issue, in many of these debates, beyond the concerns about history and national identity, are often unaddressed questions about the role and inter-relationship of historical knowledge and historical understanding in historical learning. Research on historical thinking is on-going and a complex tradition of enquiry has developed across national borders in the last 30 years, focusing, in particular on developing students understanding of historical meta-concepts such as ‘evidence’ and ‘causation’. There has been comparatively little focus, however, on the historical content that students study, on how they study it and on how mastery of historical content contributes to students overall picture of a historical past. This volume gathers together recent research and theorising from around the world on key issues central to historical learning and instruction. What sense do students make of the history that they are taught? Are students able to organise historical knowledge in order to form large scale representations of the past and what difficulties can children face in doing so? What are the relationships that obtain between history as an academic discipline, as practised in universities, and history as a subject taught in schools? What can research tell us about the effects of instructional strategies that aim to help students ‘join up’ what they learn in class into meaningful historical knowledge and understanding?

Book excerpt: Debates about good governance are increasingly focused on the coordination failure that occurs when several agencies are required to act in concert with each other, and this monograph looks at just such a case in the South African government's efforts to "join up" education and work to produce a skilled labor force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I attempt to re-examine relationships in light of scripture for the purpose of revealing some misunderstood truth about relationships. I hope to provide the reader with a view of Relationship in light of how God would have us view it from a spiritual perspective. A relationship is the process of becoming one in unity with each other. It cannot be done by man alone even as a world view. A healthy relationship is a spiritual relationship. We need to look deeper into the word of God for understanding what God has joined together, not just in marriage but in our entire lives. In our society today we want to take what God has created and make it work our way. When it comes to a relationship we selfishly replace that responsibility with our personal desires. We are expecting the relationship to work under our control and understanding, giving no thought to the fact we really have no foundation for that relationship to stand. Even in considering the things that are most valuable to us in a relationship, the appearance, personality, character, money, sex or even intelligence are not foundations for a relationship. They may be valuable to us but not enough to base our lives on. They are not even stable themselves because nothing stays the same but God. When we have our own values and put them in the place of righteousness we will never be able to see or understand the truth. Our feelings and our values combined are a deadly combination for making decisions morally or ethically if not guided by the principles of God. Therefore, In a Relationship we should consider a required commitment with the understanding of what that means spiritually and physically. A relationship must be about oneness and with love. In order to understand a relationship we need to understand God’s will for our lives.

Book excerpt: Join the adventure, romance and tragedy of families in the late 1830s and early 1840s. Many couples married very young; but the life expectancy was around 40 years of age. Couples often stayed close to family, even living on the same land. Each couple in this story has different reasons to move west, but they join their lives as they join trails. Two young couples are soon joined by a third, newlywed couple on the wagon train. The Iowa Territory was known for fertile grass lands for farming and tracks of forest for lumber. What could not be expressed was the varied beauty of the Iowa landscape. Matthew and Zeta Emmerson, Ruben and Amy Younst and Jack and Cassandra Draper join together on the same wagon train and develop friendships. They meet and befriend John Fetters, Old John, on the trail after the tragic loss of his wife, Fran. Join them on their adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about marriage from the sociological and psychological point of view and as an object of civil and canon law. But in terms of systematic theology this treatment of marriage as a sacrament may very well be unique. Every effort has been made to keep the text from becoming too academic while at the same time providing the average educated reader with a wealth of original insights into the "mystery" of marriage: in creation and as transformed by Christ. Chapters cover sacramental consent, bond, and covenant as well as the quest for the sign. Such thorny problems as the role of faith in the sacrament, marriage with an unbaptized person, the most pressing ecumenical questions and the relationship between the sacrament and contraception are studied in depth. Finally, the "sacrament of family" is treated at some length with an eye to its social and redemptive dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Web has not been hyped enough. That's the startling thesis of this one-of-a-kind book that's sure to become a classic work of social commentary. Just as Marshall McLuhan forever altered our view of broadcast media, Weinberger shows that the new medium of the Web is not only altering social institutions such as business and government but, more important, is transforming bedrock concepts of our culture such as space, time, the public, and even reality itself. Weinberger introduces us to denizens of this new world, among them Zannah, whose online diary turns self-revelation into play; Tim Bray, whose map of the Web reveals what's at the heart of the new Web space; and Danny Yee and Claudiu Popa, part of the new breed of Web experts we trust despite their lack of qualifications. Through stories of life on the Web, an insightful take on some familiar (and some unfamiliar) Web sites, and a wicked sense of humor, Weinberger puts the Web into the social and intellectual context we need to begin assessing its true impact on our lives. The irony, according to Weinberger, is that this new technology is more in tune with our authentic selves than is the modern world. Funny, provocative, and ultimately hopeful, Small Pieces Loosely Joined makes us look at the Web -- and at life -- in a new light. From Small Pieces Loosely Joined: The Web has sent a jolt through our culture, zapping our economy, our ideas about the sharing of creative works, and possibly even institutions such as religion and government. Why? How do we explain the lightning charge of the Web? If it has fallen short of our initial hopes and fears about its transformational powers, why did it excite those hopes and fears in the first place? Why did this technology hit our culture like a bolt from Zeus? Suppose -- just suppose -- that the Web is a new world we're just beginning to inhabit . . . If the Web is changing bedrock concepts such as space, matter, time, perfection, public, knowledge, and morality -- each a chapter of this book -- no wonder we're so damn confused. That's as it should be. The Web is enabling us to rediscover what we've always known about being human: we are connected creatures in a connected world about which we care passionately . . . If this is true, then for all of the over-heated, exaggerated, manic-depressive coverage of the Web, we'd have to conclude that the Web in fact has not been hyped enough.

Goodbye Spring Vale and Schools Out for Summer are the stories of his naive teenage years and failure through the education system. Fetch Yer Cloth and Supermarket Sweep describe his time in retail, working in a family business and for a major supermarket chain. In Stella and Farah Johnny Wallman recalls his time living in Israel and the some of the dilemas and paradoxes serving in the Israeli army. The collection ends with A New Life on the Lake, previously unpublished Johnny Wallman tells of where quite often he really would like to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding our best humanity in Jesus Christ is the key theme of Andrew Cameron's fresh exploration, in which he seeks to understand ethics as springing from Jesus, and to show how identifying with Jesus Christ brings order and clarity to human life. In a world where everyone is an expert on right and wrong, this book tries to show how Jesus unifies the best of what you hear. He joins up messy lives.Cameron's accessible, coherent, and innovative analysis is divided into seven parts. Each part contains several self-contained chapters that address some specific aspect of Christian thinking about ethics and life, and each chapter is cross-referenced to other key chapters. The chapters may be read in sequence, or dipped into in any order.¥ Part 1 considers some common ways of thinking about ethics (e.g., rules, rights, values, and results).¥ Part 2 considers some arenas we are unaware of, but that have a huge impact on how we live.¥ Part 3 shows how Jesus Christ becomes a better main category than ethics for determining who we are and what we do.¥ Part 4 builds a unified field, shaped in response to Jesus Christ, by which we can orient ourselves to whatever is around us.¥ Part 5 examines some means by which we approach the daily details of life within this overall orientation.¥ Part 6 looks at some aspects of our life-package, or vocation, to see how they are located within the unified field.¥ Part 7 visits some areas of discussion that cause great disagreement between Christians and others, and tries to show why.Cameron offers a stimulating reappraisal of our cluttered, tumultuous lives and encourages us to see life through a different lens.
