This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wycliffe and His English Precursors When I compare the two groups of Sources which serve to elucidate the personality and the entire his torical position of Wiclif, I come in sight Of the fact that the English sermons and tracts most recently printed belong, almost without exception, to the four last years Of his life (1381 They serve, there fore, to throw upon his latest convictions and efforts however comparatively well known these were before - a still clearer and fuller documentary light. The Latin works, on the other hand, so far as they only exist in ms, were for the most part written at earlier dates, some of them indeed going back as far as the year 1370. These latter, therefore, have a specially high value, because we learn from them the thoughts and doings Of Wiclif during an earlier stadium of his life; and, what is most important of all, they open up to us 'a View of his gradual development - Of the progress of his mind in insight and enlightenment. Book Synopsis Wyclif and the Oxford Schools by : J. A. Robson
Download or read book Wyclif and the Oxford Schools written by J. A. Robson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Robson gives a full account of Wyclif's career as an Oxford don - the little-known period of his life before in 1372 he became a controversialist - so answering the question, why was Wyclif when he became a public figure already acknowledged the leading master in Oxford? Part I of the book examines scholastic theology at Oxford from 1330 to 1370, with special emphasis on Bradwardine and Fitzltalph, the two great influences on Wyclif. Part II analyses Wyclif's most important work of philosophy, the Summa de Ente. The last chapter discusses the survival of realist metaphysics at Oxford after Wyclif's condemnation. The book is therefore a study in scholastic philosophy and theology, which helps us to understand the later Wyclif, and throws light on intellectual life at Oxford in the fourteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wycliffe was known as the MORNING STAR of the Reformation; a star rising upon a new day. Wickliffe (or Wycliffe) was born in 1330 AD and died in 1384. He attended Oxford University, receiving his doctorate in 1372. Most of his life was spent teaching at Oxford, and studying God’s Word in Oxford’s extensive library. He was a brilliant scholar who mastered the late medieval scholastic tradition, and was recognized by John of Guant (The Duke of Lancaster) as one who was extraordinarily gifted in theology and preaching. Not only was he an able clergyman, but he was also involved in state affairs. Wickliffe performed diplomatic duties for the crown, and wrote extensively on supporting civil government. This is one of the few biographies that exist on the life of Wickliffe.
