The book stresses that Man must ceaselessly unravel his mysteries and strive for a new and more mature expression of his nature. The author sees this expression as an emphasis on the significance of the individual living in community and on the person in the process of performing an action. The author states in his preface that he has tried to face the major issues concerning life, nature, and the existence of Man directly as they present themselves to Man in his struggles to survive while maintaining the dignity of a human being, but who is torn apart between his all too limited condition and his highest aspirations to set himself free. Book excerpt: In the most wide-ranging history of phenomenology since Herbert Spiegelberg’s The Phenomenological Movement over fifty years ago, Baring uncovers a new and unexpected force—Catholic intellectuals—behind the growth of phenomenology in the early twentieth century, and makes the case for the movement’s catalytic intellectual and social impact. Of all modern schools of thought, phenomenology has the strongest claim to the mantle of “continental” philosophy. In the first half of the twentieth century, phenomenology expanded from a few German towns into a movement spanning Europe. Edward Baring shows that credit for this prodigious growth goes to a surprising group of early enthusiasts: Catholic intellectuals. Placing phenomenology in historical context, Baring reveals the enduring influence of Catholicism in twentieth-century intellectual thought. Converts to the Real argues that Catholic scholars allied with phenomenology because they thought it mapped a path out of modern idealism—which they associated with Protestantism and secularization—and back to Catholic metaphysics. Seeing in this unfulfilled promise a bridge to Europe’s secular academy, Catholics set to work extending phenomenology’s reach, writing many of the first phenomenological publications in languages other than German and organizing the first international conferences on phenomenology. The Church even helped rescue Edmund Husserl’s papers from Nazi Germany in 1938. But phenomenology proved to be an unreliable ally, and in debates over its meaning and development, Catholic intellectuals contemplated the ways it might threaten the faith. Book excerpt: Wojtyla's battle cry is to have an integral anthropology i.e., to see man in his complete integral whole including his soma and the psyche, moral and spiritual dimension ; more so, his action with its subjective and intersubjective aspect. It is through man's action that he fully reveals himself as a person. In every action that man performed there is a moral trace that imprints in man ; he either becomes good or bad, depending on the moral virtuality of the action. In his intersubjective aspect of man, he participates with others as a natural consequence of his existence within a community. Yet only through an authentic attitudes of solidarity and opposition that he is able to deal with others properly. As part of his intersubjective dimension of man, he loves. And for Wojtyla there is no other way of treating others other than through love. In which and through which a person is able to realize himself and the others. This is so because love is the source of all humanity's various spheres of existence and the fullest realization of all the potentialities with which man is endowed with. This love finds its summit in betrothed love, the total self-giving of a person to the other. A surrender of the incommunicable 'I' to the other's 'I'. This happens in marriage. But what will happen if these philosophical concepts of acting person and love be integrated in order to have a developed concept of Loving person? This is the primary concern of the research, to look at how John Paul II integrated Wojtyla's philosphy with his moral theological teachings as found in Veritatis Splendor. The subjective and intersubjective aspect of man's action and loving was used and raised to the higher level of moral theological teachings. Thus formultaing Loving person, whose personalistic value and the command to love(from his philosophy) were integrated to the human dignity and being imago of God (Ontological ground of man). Therefore, man is no longer just called to participate, to love and to be with others, but more so, he is now call to constantly love through actions that is in conformity with the demands of the Gospel "to love your neighbor." This love is a total self-giving, yet no longer just for man or a woman but rather to God. Man's loving action therefore, is directed to God in a way that is expressed through vowing to the truth shown by God. And upon knowing the truth, dies in total obedience to it: MArtyrdom i.e. the ultimate expression of Agape. There is Therefore a movement from mere acting person to loving person.
