Book excerpt: Two Treatises of Government is a work by an English teacher and philosopher John Locke about the state origin and its role in the society, the “civilized” form of government in contradiction to the tyrannical monarchy that became a basis for the civil society idea. In The First Treatise, Locke analyzes the malignancy of a divine origin theory of any state power and proves that this idea will inevitably lead to poverty in one form or another. Eventually, this divine origin (jure divino) doctrine will put an end to every government. In The Second Treatise, Locke explains an origin of the state as a natural result of concluding the so-called “social agreement”. According to Locke, people united and reached this social agreement in order to defend everybody’s rights more efficiently.

Book excerpt: As one of the early Enlightenment philosophers in England, John Locke sought to bring reason and critical intelligence to the discussion of the origins of civil society. Endeavoring to reconstruct the nature and purpose of government, a social contract theory is proposed. The Second Treatise sets forth a detailed discussion of how civil society came to be and the nature of its inception. Locke's discussion of tacit consent, separation of powers, and the right of citizens to revolt against repressive governments, has made The Second Treatise one of the most influential essays in the history of political philosophy.

It helped entrench ideas of a social contract, human rights, and consent as guiding principles for modern Western democracy. His Letter calls for religious tolerance and separation of church and state. This edition offers an essential guide to these two foundational works.

Book excerpt: Two Treatises of Government (or Two Treatises of Government: In the Former, The False Principles, and Foundation of Sir Robert Filmer, and His Followers, Are Detected and Overthrown. The Latter Is an Essay Concerning The True Original, Extent, and End of Civil Government) is a work of political philosophy published anonymously in 1689 by John Locke. The First Treatise attacks patriarchalism in the form of sentence-by-sentence refutation of Robert Filmer's Patriarcha, while the Second Treatise outlines Locke's ideas for a more civilized society based on natural rights and contract theory. This publication contrasts former political works by Locke himself. In Two Tracts on Government, written in 1660, Locke defends a very conservative position; however Locke never published it. In 1669 Locke co-authored the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina, which endorses aristocracy, slavery and serfdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published anonymously in December 1689, John Locke's "Two Treatises of Government" are considered to be some of the most important works of political philosophy ever written. In the first treatise Locke disputes the divine right of monarchial rule principle that is put forth in the book "Patriarcha" by Sir Robert Filmer. The first treatise is in fact a sentence by sentence refutation of "Patriarcha." Filmer asserts the idea that absolute authority over the world flows from the Biblical Adam and his ownership of the world and that the heir of Adam is the rightful inheritor of this authority. Locke dismisses this line of reasoning that authority flows from some divine lineage to the first man in favor of a system based on natural laws and consent of the people. In the second treatise Locke sets forth the basic principles of natural law that lay the foundation for basic human rights and the government of man. Also contained within this volume is the shorter work, "A Letter Concerning Toleration."

In his provocative 15-page introduction to this edition, the late eminent political theorist C. B. Macpherson examines Locke's arguments for limited, conditional government, private property, and right of revolution and suggests reasons for the appeal of these arguments in Locke's time and since.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Treatise of Government" is one of the great classics of Political Philosophy. Its author, John Locke, became one of the greatest philosophers of liberalism and democracy, and his ideas remain relevant and are studied to this day. Locke's thoughts influenced important events in history, particularly in Europe and America. He is often called the theorist of the English Revolution (1688) and was the main source of ideas for the American Revolution (1776), influencing the Declaration of Independence and the state constitutions of that country. In "Second Treatise of Government," John Locke expresses his liberal thinking and his position against absolutist governments with arguments that demonstrate that government emanates from the people and that, together with the law, should be used for the common good.

Book excerpt: The Second Treatise of Civil Government John Locke Two Treatises of Government (or Two Treatises of Government: In the Former, The False Principles, and Foundation of Sir Robert Filmer, and His Followers, Are Detected and Overthrown. Two Treatises was first published, anonymously, in December 1689 (following printing conventions of the time, its title page was marked 1690). Locke was unhappy with this edition, complaining to the publisher about its many errors. For the rest of his life, he was intent on republishing the Two Treatises in a form that better reflected his meaning. Peter Laslett, one of the foremost Locke scholars, has suggested that Locke held the printers to a higher -standard of perfection- than the technology of the time would permit. Be that as it may, the first edition was indeed replete with errors. The second edition was even worse, and finally printed on cheap paper and sold to the poor. The third edition was much improved, but Locke was still not satisfied. He made corrections to the third edition by hand and entrusted the publication of the fourth to his friends, as he died before it could be brought out.
