Book Synopsis The American Presidents, Washington to Tyler by : Robert A. Nowlan
Download or read book The American Presidents, Washington to Tyler written by Robert A. Nowlan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As of 2012, only 43 men have held the office of the President of the United States. Some have been sanctified and some reviled. This historical work addresses the careers of the first ten presidents, men who made vital contributions not only to the office of the presidency, but to the course of the fledgling nation. From Washington through Tyler, every term is recounted in detail and each presidential profile provides as many as a hundred quotations (with full source notes) by the president, his friends, family, historians, and others. Each profile ends with an extensive bibliography of books about the president, his principles and policies, and also provides suggestion for further reading. Rigorously nonpartisan in approach, this detail-rich text describes the early years of what may well be one of the most demanding jobs in the world.

This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its foundation in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Phila. has preserved manuscript documents even after the information has been published. The secretaries, curators, librarians, editors & other officers of the Academy had all cached such papers somewhere for posterity. These holdings were largely brought together by Edward Nolan for his history to celebrate the 100th anniversary. He had hoped to have his long history published & presented as a memorial at that time. When funds were not available for printing, the ¿Short History¿ listed in the bibliography was used instead. The materials published here in microfilm form have always been locked away in the Academy¿s hall & always remained in the custody of the librarian.

Book Synopsis The Letters of Jessie Benton Frémont by : Jessie Benton Frémont
Download or read book The Letters of Jessie Benton Frémont written by Jessie Benton Frémont and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bold, talented, and ambitious, Jessie Benton Fremont was one of Victorian America's most controversial women. As the daughter of powerful Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri and the wife of John Charles Fremont - western explorer, presidential candidate, and Civil War general - she not only witnessed but struggled to influence many of the major events of her time. Despite the restrictions she faced as a woman, she managed to carve out a vital role for herself as a writer, dedicated abolitionist, and secretary and other self to her mercurial husband. She collaborated on his best-selling exploration reports, served as his behind-the-scenes political advisor and chief Civil War aide, and worked as a lobbyist for Arizona mining interests. In The Letters of Jessie Benton Fremont, Pamela Herr and Mary Lee Spence create a compelling portrait of this remarkable woman. They supplement their collection of 271 fully annotated letters, selected from 800 they uncovered, with an elegant introduction and seven authoritative chapter essays that elucidate the significant periods of her life. The correspondents range from intimate friends like Elizabeth Blair Lee to public figures like Horace Greeley, Abraham Lincoln, Dorothea Dix, John Greenleaf Whittier, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, William T. Sherman, and Theodore Roosevelt. Readers interested in women's studies, the westward movement, the Civil War, and the Gilded Age will find a rich source in The Letters of Jessie Benton Fremont.

Book Synopsis The Letters of William Cullen Bryant: 1809-1836 by : William Cullen Bryant
Download or read book The Letters of William Cullen Bryant: 1809-1836 written by William Cullen Bryant and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William Cullen Bryant signed the first of 314 letters in the present volume, in 1809, he was a frail and shy farm boy of fourteen who had nonetheless already won some fame as the satirist of Thomas Jefferson. When he wrote the last, in 1836, he had become the chief poet of his country, the editor of its principal liberal newspaper, and the friend and collaborator of its leading artists and writers. His collected poems, previously published at New York, Boston, and London, were going into their third edition. His incisive editorials in the New York Evening Post were affecting the decisions of Andrew Jackson's administration. His poetic themes were beginning to find expression in the landscape paintings of Robert Weir, Asher Durand, and Thomas Cole. Here, in essence, is the first volume of the autobiography of one whom Abraham Lincoln remarked after his first visit to New York City in 1860, It was worth the journey to the East merely to see such a man.And John Bigelow, who of Bryant's many eulogists knew him best, said in 1878 of his longtime friend and business partner, There was no eminent American upon whom the judgment of his countrymen would be more immediate and unanimous. The broad simple outline of his character and career had become universally familiar, like a mountain or a sea.

Book Synopsis The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell, 1775–1817 by : Chaim M. Rosenberg
Download or read book The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell, 1775–1817 written by Chaim M. Rosenberg and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Revolutionary War, despite political independence, the United States still relied on other countries for manufactured goods. Francis Cabot Lowell was one of the principal investors in building the India Wharf and the shops and warehouses close to Boston harbor. His work was instrumental in establishing domestic industry for the United States and brought the Industrial Revolution to the United States. From 1810 to the start of the War of 1812, he traveled through Great Britain, where he saw the tremendous changes caused by the Industrial Revolution, starting with cotton textiles. On his return to the United States he focused on establishing a domestic textile industry to replace imported goods. With his brother-in-law, Patrick Tracy Jackson, he built the Boston Manufacturing Company at Waltham-America's first integrated mill. With his star mechanic, Paul Moody, he developed a power loom and other machines suitable for local conditions. The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell, 1775-1817 tells the story of this amazing man and the great success of the Boston Manufacturing Company, which spurred the American industrial revolution. Francis Cabot Lowell's method-a detailed investment plan, cheap raw materials and power, a motivated labor force, a sound marketing plan, and, above all, modern technology-became the standard for the American factory of the nineteenth century. When Francis Cabot Lowell died, his associates established America's first industrial city, and named it Lowell in his honor.
