Download or read book Widescreen Cinema written by John Belton and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ladies and gentlemen: THIS IS CINERAMA." With these words, on September 30, 1952, the heavy red curtains in New York's Broadway Theatre opened on a panoramic Technicolor image of the Rockaways Playland Atom-Smasher Roller Coaster--and moviegoers were abruptly plunged into a new and revolutionary experience. The cinematic transformation heralded by this giddy ride was, however, neither as sudden nor as straightforward as it seemed. Widescreen Cinema leads us through the twists and turns and decades it took for film to change its shape and, along the way, shows how this fitful process reflects the vagaries of cultural history. Widescreen and wide-film processes had existed since the 1890s. Why, then, John Belton asks, did 35mm film become a standard? Why did a widescreen revolution fail in the 1920s but succeed in the 1950s? And why did movies shrink again in the 1960s, leaving us with the small screen multiplexes and mall cinemas that we know today? The answers, he discovers, have as much to do with popular notions of leisure time and entertainment as with technology. Beginning with film's progress from peepshow to projection in 1896 and focusing on crucial stages in film history, such as the advent of sound, Belton puts widescreen cinema into its proper cultural context. He shows how Cinerama, CinemaScope, Vista Vision, Todd-AO, and other widescreen processes marked significant changes in the conditions of spectatorship after World War 11 -and how the film industry itself sought to redefine those conditions. The technical, the economic, the social, the aesthetic -every aspect of the changes shaping and reshaping film comes under Belton's scrutiny as he reconstructs the complex history of widescreen cinema and relates this history to developments in mass-produced leisure-time entertainment in the twentieth century. Highly readable even at its most technical, this book illuminates a central episode in the evolution of cinema and, in doing so, reveals a great deal about the shifting fit between film and society.
Book Synopsis Reconstructing Lenin by : Tamás Krausz
Download or read book Reconstructing Lenin written by Tamás Krausz and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Ilyich Lenin is among the most enigmatic and influential figures of the twentieth century. While his life and work are crucial to any understanding of modern history and the socialist movement, generations of writers on the left and the right have seen fit to embalm him endlessly with superficial analysis or dreary dogma. Now, after the fall of the Soviet Union and “actually-existing” socialism, it is possible to consider Lenin afresh, with sober senses trained on his historical context and how it shaped his theoretical and political contributions. Reconstructing Lenin, four decades in the making and now available in English for the first time, is an attempt to do just that. Tamás Krausz, an esteemed Hungarian scholar writing in the tradition of György Lukács, Ferenc Tokei, and István Mészáros, makes a major contribution to a growing field of contemporary Lenin studies. This rich and penetrating account reveals Lenin busy at the work of revolution, his thought shaped by immediate political events but never straying far from a coherent theoretical perspective. Krausz balances detailed descriptions of Lenin’s time and place with lucid explications of his intellectual development, covering a range of topics like war and revolution, dictatorship and democracy, socialism and utopianism.Reconstructing Lenin will change the way you look at a man and a movement; it will also introduce the English-speaking world to a profound radical scholar.

This book was released on 2007-11-17 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it's possible to go through life not knowing how to tie a dhoti or carve an endless wooden chain, you never know when unusual skills will come in handy. And that's the fun of this fabulously bizarre handbook, which explains skills that range from the mundane (how to sweep a carpet, how to lose at checkers) to the outrageous (how to restore the apparently dead, how to read minds) to the random (how to be a guest in an English country home). John Krausz has culled material from government pamphlets, Victorian etiquette manuals, farmer's publications, old military handbooks and magazines, and more. Over 1,000 detailed line drawings illustrate his advice on good posture, Spencerian penmanship, Swiss barns, photosculpture, the ethics and aesthetics of eating...and of course, buying an elephant.

Book Synopsis Restoring Baird's Image by : Donald F. McLean
Download or read book Restoring Baird's Image written by Donald F. McLean and published by IET. This book was released on 2000 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baird, a British television pioneer, experimented with video recording on gramophone discs in the late 1920s. McLean (a consultant) has restored the surviving "Phonovision" discs and, using computer techniques reminiscent of an archaeological dig, has revealed the images on the discs and uncovered details of how the recordings were made. McLean also restored amateur recordings of the BBC's 30-line Television Services (1932-1935), providing a glimpse at what viewers were then watching. This book helps explain this period in television history. Illustrated with historic photographs, it sheds light on the achievements of Baird, the development of video recording, and the definition and invention of television itself. c. Book News Inc.

The trip proves anything but smooth when one of the offices is found murdered and everyone becomes a suspect! John Solomon: Supercargo is the second volume of master pulp writer, H. Bedford-Jones’ John Solomon saga, which would go on to span eleven novels and numerous short stories from the 1910’s into the 1930’s.
