Book excerpt: Correspondence from naturalist John Kirk Townsend (1809-1851), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to naturalist John Bachman (1790-1874), of Charleston, South Carolina, dated from 1838 to 1848. In a letter dated January 21, 1838, Townsend mentions possibly writing an account of his part in the expedition of Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth (1802-1856) to the Pacific, as well as an appendix describing the mammals and birds he collected. He also offers to send some of the quadruped specimens to Bachman for description, including Canis nubilus, spotted lynx, and various species of hare, some of which were preserved in spirits and corrosive sublimate. He also writes in 1838 about sending additional quadrupeds to Bachman, such as squirrels, a weasel, and meadow mice, and a prospectus for his book, The Narrative of a journey across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and a Visit to the Sandwich Islands, which was published in 1839. In a letter dated September 27, 1843, Townsend urges Bachman to complete descriptions of the quadrupeds he had sent and discusses his new interest in entomology, asking if Bachman would collect and send him local insect specimens. "I am crazy for insects, & will do anything not dishonorable to obtain them," he writes. A letter dated March 16, 1848, expresses condolences for the death of one of Bachman's children, and asks him to return Townsend's quadruped specimens, which Townsend was planning to sell to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

Book excerpt: Correspondence from naturalist John Kirk Townsend (1809-1851), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to naturalist and scientific illustrator Victor Gifford Audubon (1809-1860) concerning the exchange and classification of animal specimens and skins, dated July 20, 1848. Townsend writes he is sending a box of squirrel skins to Victor Audubon, and he offers to forward quadruped specimens he is expecting that were collected by John Charles Frémont (1813-1890) in California. Townsend writes that several of his own skins, including "the only perfect specimen of the curious & rare Plecotus Townsendii," are in the hands of naturalist John Bachman (1790-1874), despite several requests for their return, and Townsend asks Victor Audubon to mention the matter if he writes to Bachman. He also writes that he hopes the health of Victor Audubon's father, John James Audubon (1785-1851), has improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides portraits of the early naturalists who explored the New World in the pre-Darwinian Age. The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Europe and America saw the dawn of a golden age of science in which society energetically sought to quantify, categorize, and rationally explain the world. The author profiles nine important naturalists -- both dedicated professionals and amateurs -- who set off for what is now North and South America to discover and document the natural wonders they found there. Their stories of adventure are punctuated with hardship, both in finding the financing to get their ventures off the ground, and the vagaries of the elements they encountered in the New World. Despite the odds, these explorers, either traveling with artists, or as artists themselves, chronicled their adventures in both words and pictures, providing a unique portrait of the natural world in North, South, and Central America before parts of it became widely settled.

Nobles explores the central irony of Audubon's true nature: the man who took so much time and trouble to depict birds so carefully left us a bold but deceptive picture of himself.

Book excerpt: "Because the royal octavo edition is a work of art in its own right and the source of much of Audubon's reputation and popularity, Ron Tyler offers an engrossing narrative of the "little work's" conception, production, distribution, and reception. He mines a rich store of hitherto neglected sources, including Audubon family account books, newly discovered original drawings for the octavo edition, numerous proofs for the plates, sales records, and personal correspondence, for a fresh look at this important aspect of Audubon's career." "This study carefully reconstructs the processes that produced the most popular natural history book of the nineteenth century. Tyler describes the changes that Audubon made for his "petit edition," including the addition of seventeen species; explains the printing methods used to produce the plates; discusses, for the first time, the surprising differences between the plates in the double elephant folio and in the royal octavo and subsequent octavo editions; and outlines the way the Audubon family sold and distributed such a large and complex work. From these explorations, Audubon emerges not only as a woodsman artist, but also as a careful and persistent businessman of proven entrepreneurial ability.".

Book excerpt: John James Audubon came to America as a dapper eighteen-year-old eager to make his fortune. He had a talent for drawing and an interest in birds, and he would spend the next thirty-five years traveling to the remotest regions of his new country–often alone and on foot–to render his avian subjects on paper. The works of art he created gave the world its idea of America. They gave America its idea of itself. Here Richard Rhodes vividly depicts Audubon’s life and career: his epic wanderings; his quest to portray birds in a lifelike way; his long, anguished separations from his adored wife; his ambivalent witness to the vanishing of the wilderness. John James Audubon: The Making of an American is a magnificent achievement.
