Book excerpt: Dinah Maria Craik born Dinah Maria Mulock, also often credited as Miss Mulock or Mrs. Craik) (20 April 1826 - 12 October 1887) was an English novelist and poet.Mulock was born at Stoke-on-Trent to Dinah and Thomas Mulock and raised in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, where her father was then minister of a small independent non-conformist congregation. Her childhood and early youth were much affected by his unsettled fortunes, but she obtained a good education from various quarters and felt called to be a writer. She came to London about 1846, much at the same time as two friends, Alexander Macmillan and Charles Edward Mudie. Introduced by Camilla Toulmin to Westland Marston, she rapidly made friends in London, and found great encouragement for the stories for the young. In 1865 she married George Lillie Craik a partner with Alexander Macmillan in the publishing house of Macmillan & Company, and nephew of George Lillie Craik. They adopted a foundling baby girl, Dorothy, in 1869. At Shortlands, near Bromley, Kent, while in a period of preparation for Dorothy's wedding, she died of heart failure on 12 October 1887, aged 61. Her last words were reported to have been: "Oh, if I could live four weeks longer! but no matter, no matter!" Her final book, An Unknown Country, was published by Macmillan in 1887, the year of her death. Dorothy married Alexander Pilkington in 1887 but they divorced in 1911 and she went on to marry Captain Richards of Macmine Castle. She and Alexander had just one son John Mulock Pilkington. John married Freda Roskelly and they had a son and daughter.

Book excerpt: "An enormously useful and complete edition of an important and neglected Victorian novel."-Helena Michie, Rice UniversityJohn Halifax, Gentleman follows the fortunes of a poor orphan who is befriended by the narrator, Phineas Fletcher, the invalid son of a Quaker tanner in an English provincial town. He raises himself up from his humble beginnings, and the book reflects the changing conditions in England during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, as the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the middle class altered the social and political complexion of the country. Published in 1856, the book was immensely popular with contemporary readers. John Halifax, Gentleman was written by Dinah Craik (1826-1887), the daughter of a Nonconformist minister and his wife, who turned to writing when her father deserted his children following their mother's death.(cover image courtesy of Michal Zacharzewski)

In 1857 she wrote John Halifax, Gentleman, which is considered to be her best work. Christian's Mistake was published in 1865. An excerpt reads, "If Dr. Grey has no objection, I should like to have stated my father's occupation or my own. I do not wish to hide or appear ashamed of either. Certainly not," replied Dr. Grey; and, taking up the pen, he added, "Edward Oakley, Esq., late organist of Saint Bede's." It was the last earthly memento of one who, born a gentleman and a genius, had so lived, that, as all Avonsbridge well knew, the greatest blessing which could have happened to his daughter was his death. But, as by some strange and merciful law of compensation often occurs, Christian, inheriting mind and person from him, had inherited temperament, disposition, character from the lowly-born mother, who was every thing that he was not, and who had lived just long enough to stamp on the girl of thirteen a moral impress which could resist all contamination, and leave behind a lovely dream of motherhood that might, perhaps-- God knows!--have been diviner than the reality.

Book excerpt: Dinah Craik was a British novelist who wrote children's books. In 1857 she wrote John Halifax, Gentleman, which is considered to be her best work. An excerpt from A Noble Life reads, "It was on a June day - ten years after that bright June day when the minister of Cairnforth had walked with such a sad heart up to Cairnforth Castle, and seen for the first time its unconscious heir - the poor little orphan baby who in such apparent mockery was called "the Earl." The woods, the hills, the loch, looked exactly the same - nature never changes. As Mr. Cardross walked up to the Castle once more, - the first time for many months, - in accordance with a request of Mr. Menteith's, who had written to say the Earl was coming home - he could hardly believe it was ten years since that sad week when the baby-heir was born, and the Countess's funeral had passed out from that now long-closed door. Mr. Cardross's step was heavier and his face sadder now than then. He who had so often sympathized with others' sorrows, had had to suffer patiently his own. From the Manse gate as from that of the Castle, the mother and mistress had been carried - never to return. A new Helen - only fifteen years old - was trying vainly to replace to father and brothers her who was - as Mr. Cardross still touchingly put it - " away." But though his grief was more than a year old, the minister mourned still. "

Book excerpt: This 1856 novel, one of the most beloved of the Victorian period, follows the life, from childhood to death, of an orphaned boy who grows to become a wealthy and powerful leader in his community. The young John Halifax is taken in by Abel Fletcher, a Quaker tanner, and forms a close friendship with Fletcher’s son, Phineas. Through hard work and integrity, John overcomes obstacles to find domestic happiness and material success. His achievements symbolize those of England in the early nineteenth century, and this novel captures the ambition and ebullient optimism of the growing Victorian middle class. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and full annotation; the idea of the “gentleman” in Victorian culture, labour unrest in the early nineteenth century, and women’s roles in Victorian England are explored in the broad selection of contextual documents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The baptism of the Prince was to be a lavish event. By six in the morning, the entire royal family was dressed to the nines. The tiny Prince was then dressed to the nines as well, in his exquisite christening gown, which his Royal Highness did not appreciate at all and reacted to by kicking and wailing like a typical infant. Though few people were aware of it, the Prince's visit to the church had really resulted in a little catastrophe. The state nurse-maid, an elegant and fashionable young lady of rank who was in charge of carrying him to and from the chapel, instead of his regular nurse, had been so preoccupied with organizing her train while holding the baby with the other hand that she stumbled and let him fall, right at the foot of the marble staircase. Of course, she managed to pick him up again right away, and the mishap seemed scarcely worth mentioning given how little it was. As a result, no one mentioned it. No one a few steps behind could see anything was amiss since the infant had grown deadly pale but did not cry. Later, even if the baby had cried, the sound of the silver trumpets would have drowned everything out. It would have been unfortunate to let anything ruin such a happy day.
