Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. S. Bach's Fugue in A minor exists in three versions. The version for lute, BWV 1000, is in French lute tablature by Johann Christian Weyrauch. The violin version (in the key G minor) is from Sonata I, BWV 1001, and is in Bach's own handwriting. The organ version, BWV 539, is an unauthenticated and anonymous arrangement in D minor, and has not been used as source material for this transcription. This transcription is primarily based on the version for lute, but a few elements from the violin version are also incorporated. Since the lute version bears traces of some accommodation for technical considerations relating to the idiosyncrasies of the baroque lute, some minor inconsistencies have been resolved by relying on the violin version, since it is in Bach's own hand. About the Book This book contains three complete scores of the fugue. The musical content of each is virtually identical. The solo, duet and trio versions offer three modes for exploring the music. It is recommended that the player learn both the duet and trio versions, mastering each of the parts. In this way, the musical content of all the contrapuntal melodic strands will become deeply embedded in the player's musical imagination. When the player is fully at ease with each of the individual parts of the duet and trio, then the solo version can be mastered with much greater ease. The technical issues, which are at times quite challenging, then are encountered and resolved. A perfectly detailed musical imagination of all the parts then becomes the impetus for full technical mastery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was originally published in 1967, this study of J.S. Bach was the first important work on the composer in nearly a generation. The many discoveries about Bach’s life and music that occurred in the postwar years created the need for a new interpretative study incorporating this research and this was the only book which incorporated the vast amount of material uncovered since 1950, the bicentennial of Bach’s death. The volume begins with a brief biography and is followed by an analysis of each major type of composition: vocal, organ, keyboard and instrumental music. In each section the author examines thoroughly many Bach compositions and evaluates them in relation to the rest of the composer’s work, as well as in relation to the music of his contemporaries. More than 70 music examples enable the reader to understand how Bach worked, the manner in which his genius developed and grew, and to see outstanding excerpts from his music in various stages of completion. An interesting aspect of research methods is revealed through an explanation of the detective work which has been done regarding handwriting, paper and watermarks in the original sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this landmark sourcebook, Finnish guitarists Hannu Annala and Heiki Matlik consulted more than 70 music texts as well as dozens of composer resumes acquired from the musical information centers of several countries. During the writing process, which lasted for more than three years, they received additional information from many modern composers, including Leo Brouwer and Reginald Smith Brindle among others. In addition, several internationally renowned performing guitarists provided valuable information; these include Magnus Andersson (Sweden), Remi Boucher (Canada), Margarita Escarpa (Spain), Aleksander Frauchi (Russia) and David Tanenbaum (USA) among others. The authors' aim was to write a well-structured book with separate chapters for each instrument, such as the Renaissance and Baroque guitar, the Renaissance and Baroque lute, the vihuela, etc. This unique structure enables the reader to easily discover which composers wrote for a certain instrument during any given period. In addition to the composers one would expect to find in such a comprehensive listing, the book documents several historical and modern composers for whom little previous information has been available. the book's list of more than 400 guitar and lute concertos dating from the Baroque era to the present day is a totally unprecedented.Short introductions regarding guitar and lute-like instruments as well as their basic histories are provided at the beginning of the book. the authors hope that the Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers will serve as a practical guide for both amateurs and professionals, encouraging further study of the history of these instruments and expanding the repertoire heard on today's concert stage.
