Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meyerowitz brilliantly demonstrates how Cézanne's studio and its contents enhanced the flatness of his paintings Some years ago, while working on a book commission about Provence, Joel Meyerowitz visited Cézanne's studio in Aix-en-Provence. While there, he experienced a flash of understanding about Cézanne's art. Cézanne had painted the studio walls a dark gray, mixing the color himself. Consequently, every object in the studio seemed to be absorbed into the gray of the background. There were no telltale reflections around the edges of the objects, so there was nothing that could separate them from the background itself. Meyerowitz suddenly saw how Cézanne, making his small, patch-like brush marks, moved from the object to the background, and back again to the objects, without the illusion of perspective. After all, Cézanne was the original voice of "flatness." Meyerowitz decided to take each of the objects in Cézanne's studio and view them against the gray wall (managing to obtain permission from the Director of the Atelier--no-one had touched these objects in ages). His impulse was to place each one in the exact same spot on his marble-topped table and just make a "dumb" record of it. He then decided to arrange them in rows, almost as if they were back on his shelf above the table, and made a grid of five rows with five objects on each row, with Cézanne's hat as the centerpiece. This beautifully designed volume presents these photographs, which are at once marvelous photographic still lifes and an incredible revelation of Cézanne's methods.

Book Synopsis Touching Photographs by : Margaret Olin
Download or read book Touching Photographs written by Margaret Olin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-05-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography does more than simply represent the world. It acts in the world, connecting people to form relationships and shaping relationships to create communities. In this beautiful book, Margaret Olin explores photography’s ability to “touch” us through a series of essays that shed new light on photography’s role in the world. Olin investigates the publication of photographs in mass media and literature, the hanging of exhibitions, the posting of photocopied photographs of lost loved ones in public spaces, and the intense photographic activity of tourists at their destinations. She moves from intimate relationships between viewers and photographs to interactions around larger communities, analyzing how photography affects the way people handle cataclysmic events like 9/11. Along the way, she shows us James VanDerZee’s Harlem funeral portraits, dusts off Roland Barthes’s family album, takes us into Walker Evans and James Agee’s photo-text Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and logs onto online photo albums. With over one hundred illustrations, Touching Photographs is an insightful contribution to the theory of photography, visual studies, and art history.
Download or read book Atget written by John Szarkowski and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2003 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the essence of the work of the great French photographer Eugène Atget through one hundred carefully selected photographs. Atget devoted more than thirty years of his life to the task of documenting the city of Paris and the surrounding countryside, and in the process created an oeuvre that brilliantly explains the great richness, complexity, and authentic character of his native culture. John Szarkowski, an acknowledged master of the art of looking at photographs, explores the unique sensibilities that made Atget one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century and a vital influence on the development of modern and contemporary photography. The eloquent introductory text and commentaries on Atget’s photographs form an extended essay on the remarkable visual intelligence displayed in these subtle, sometimes enigmatic pictures.
Download or read book Chain Link written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Friedlander is celebrated for his ability to weave disparate elements from ordinary life into uncanny images of great formal complexity and visual wit. And few things have attracted his attention--or been more unpredictable in their effect--than the humble chain link fence. Erected to delineate space, form protective barriers and bring order to chaos, the fences in Friedlander's pictures catch filaments of light, throw disconcerting shadows and visually interrupt scenes without fully occluding them. Sometimes the steel mesh seems as delicate as lace; at others it appears as tough as snakeskin. In this book's 97 pictures, drawn from over four decades of work, it recurs as versatile, utilitarian and ubiquitous--not unlike the photographer himself.
Download or read book Cape Light written by Bruce K. MacDonald and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2015 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cape Light, Joel Meyerowitz's series of serene and contemplative color photographs taken on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, quickly became one of the most influential and popular photobooks in the latter part of the 20th century after its publication in 1978, breaking new ground both for color photography and for the medium's acceptance in the art world. Now, more than 35 years later, Joel Meyerowitz: Cape Light is back. This edition features all the now-iconic images, newly remastered and luxuriously printed in a larger format. In Cape Light, everyday scenes--an approaching storm, a local grocery store at dusk, the view through a bedroom window--are transformed by the stunning natural light of Cape Cod and the luminous vision of the photographer. Though Meyerowitz had begun shooting in color on the streets of New York a decade earlier, it was this collection of photographs that brought his sensitive color photography to wider notice. Meyerowitz is a contemporary master of color photography, and this powerful, captivating photobook is a classic of the genre.
