Book excerpt: Joe Manning owned a good-size ranch outside of a small town in Virginia, and he was plowing one day close to his house. He was getting ready to plant a garden patch for the family to use for their livelihood. Three men came along the road. All three had sidearms and one man had a rifle. He shot Joe in the back while Joe was trying to get to the house to get his rifle and defend his family. Then they killed his wife and young daughter, burned the house down around them, and left Joe in his yard bleeding to death. Joe, who cared deeply about people, was the first person in the community to volunteer to help everyone who was in need. Joe, with his wife at one time or another, had entertained in their home all the people in the area. Who could have shot poor Joe Manning in the back twice and destroyed his family and house? What is going on around here? This has always been a nice area of the country. I wonder who is behind all this killing. Why would they kill his wife and daughter, and why would they have burned down his nice house? This is really a mystery. I wonder if Joe will survive. The doctor does not think so. I wonder what the sheriff is doing about it. He does not seem to have a clue. Will anyone else have to die before we find out who the culprits are?

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Travel. Memoir. From his time aboard the merchant freighter Noble Star, Joe Manning brings us a book of adventure, distant landfalls, and the interesting people met during his sojourn at sea. Through his humbling journey of learning to tie knots and painting the cavernous holds of the ship, to his proud moments of skippering on the bridge, to his heroic--and heartbreaking--rescue of fellow shipwrecked sailors, Manning navigates the waters of maritime lore and reality with the same fascination and precision of Conrad or Melville. CERTAIN RELEVANT PASSAGES is that wonderful kind of book that informs while it entertains, and Joe Manning is that gifted kind of storyteller who takes every reader safely to sea.

Manning offers a major new history of economic life in the Mediterranean world in the Iron Age, from Phoenician trading down to the Hellenistic era and the beginning of Rome's imperial supremacy. Drawing on a wide range of ancient sources and the latest social theory, Manning suggests that a search for an illusory single "ancient economy" has obscured the diversity of lived experience in the Mediterranean world, including both changes in political economies over time and differences in cultural conceptions of property and money. At the same time, he shows how the region's economies became increasingly interconnected during this period." -- Publisher's description

Book excerpt: "Dan Jenkins calls Baugh "the greatest quarterback who ever lived, college or pro." Even though he played for the Washington Redskins mostly in the pre-TV era (1937-1952), he is still remembered and revered by fans, who consistently name him as the former player they would most like to see back in the game. Baugh was one of the first inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A living link between the leather-helmet era and the modern, Baugh spread the field, opened up the game, and made the forward pass a strategic weapon, not a desperation heave. He made quarterback the glamour position, which means that Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, Tom Brady, and all the other football field generals since Baugh are in his debt"--

Book excerpt: Are you struggling to accept God’s love? We’ve bought into the lie that we are worthy of God’s love only when our lives are going well. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and things become less-than-perfect, we scramble to present a good front to the world—and to God. God longs for us to deeply believe and know that He loves us and accepts us as we are. He calls for us to remove our mask and establish an honest and deep relationship with Him. When we are our true selves, we can finally claim our identity as His own—Abba’s child. Let go of the pressure of an impostor lifestyle and lean into the life-changing wonder of a truly loving relationship with God. Abba’s Child will light the way to freely accepting your belovedness and being renewed by the reassurance of our Father’s deep care for you—regardless of how perfect your life isn’t. “Honest. Genuine. Creative. God hungry. These words surface when I think of the writings of Brennan Manning. Read him for yourself—you’ll see what I mean!” —Max Lucado, New York Times bestselling author “I pray that Brennan Manning and the timeless voices . . . in this book might offer you hope. May they remind you that you are loved by the Father-Creator Himself. May they sing and speak into your life against the voices that tell you otherwise.” —Jon Foreman, lead singer of Switchfoot
