Chapter 2 examines legal protection of job security in temporary contract in international contexts where it examines the concept and need for job security and job protection especially for temporary contracts based on three United Nations’ instruments, namely, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Chapter 3 studies the ILO standards in relation to job security and temporary contracts as well as those covered by the Philadelphia Declaration and other conventions and recommendations. Chapter 4 discusses Islamic jurisprudence on jobs and job security. The main aims of this chapter is to provide the framework for protecting workers as a means to enhance job security in the world especially in Islam. It discusses Islamic jurisprudence concerning work and job conditions. The Islamic precept is based on the Qur’an and Hadith and these sources are used to explain the concept of jobs in Islam. In addition, this chapter also examines the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam (CDHRI).

Our study evaluates whether this stepping-stone function is moderated by the contract duration, exploiting a Dutch policy reform that shortened the maximum duration of sequences of temporary contracts with the same employers from 3 years to 2 years. Leveraging a sharp regression discontinuity design and administrative register data, we show that the reform accelerated the transitions of temporary workers to permanent contracts with the same employers, with the effect being strongest among those working for the same employers for 1-2 years. We conclude that the reform brought more job security to temporary workers without impeding the stepping-stone function of their contracts.

Due to this, the social image of temporary employment has increased slightly. Nowadays, companies use temporary employees as an alternative to reduce their cost and remain profitable and competitive in the market (Eisenberg, 1999). This means that many companies use temporary employees to supplement their personnel needs and as a strategy to reduce their personnel cost. Depending on the situation, temporary employment agreements can be both beneficial and harmful to companies (Kirk, Belovics, 2008). On the other hand, temporary work has struggled against quite a negative image. Headlines, such as modern slavery, have been consolidated in connection with temporary work. This assumption highlights that temporary employment is used by companies to reduce labour costs and shift employment risks away from companies to- wards the employees. Therefore, it could be argued why temporary employees offer their manpower at the lowest possible wages without job security or career prospects. A fundamental question that arises here is how temporary employment can be integrated into existing labour and social structures of the company in the event of durable and intensive use and what measures should be considered by companies. According to this, the purpose of this paper is to analyse whether temporary work is a viable alternative to traditional employment. In particular, the advantages of temporary work will be discussed in association with the risks. Looking at the processes of recruitment and the integration of additional decision-making structures, such as the works council, makes it clear that the use of temporary employment requires particular requirements within the internal communication.

The book addresses as its core concern the relationship between temporary employment contracts and employee well-being. It does so within the analytic framework of the psychological contract, and advances theory and knowledge about the psychological contract by exploring it from a variety of perspectives. It also sets the psychological contract within the context of a range of other potential influences on work-related well-being including workload, job insecurity, employability, and organizational support. A key aim of the book is to identify the relative importance of these various potential influences on well-being. The book covers seven countries; Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK, as well as Israel as a comparator outside Europe. Data were collected from over 5,000 workers in over 200 organizations; and from both permanent and temporary workers as well as from employers. The book's conclusions are interesting and controversial. The central finding is that contrary to expectations, temporary workers report higher well-being than permanent workers. As expected, a range of factors help to explain variations in work-related well-being and the research highlights the important role of the psychological contract. However, even after taking into account alternative explanations, the significant influence of type of employment contract remains, with temporary workers reporting higher well-being. In addition to this core finding, by exploring several aspects of the psychological contract, and taking into account both employer and employee perspectives, the book sheds new light on the nature and role of the psychological contract. It also raises some challenging policy questions and while acknowledging the potentially precarious nature of temporary jobs, highlights the need to consider the increasingly demanding nature of permanent jobs and their effects on the well-being of employees.

In this sense the debates among and between Marxist and orthodox economic historians about the incompatibility of capitalism and unfree labor are moot: the International Labour Organisation has identified forced, coerced, and unfree labor as a contemporary issue of global concern. Previously hidden forms of unfree labor have emerged in parallel with several other well-documented trends affecting labor conditions, rights, and modes of regulation. These evolving types of unfree labor include the increasing normalization of contingent work (and, by extension, the undermining of the standard contract of employment), and an increase in labor intermediation. The normative, political, and numerical rise of temporary employment agencies in many countries in the last three decades is indicative of these trends. It is in the context of this rapidly changing landscape that this book consolidates and expands on research designed to understand new institutions for work in the global era. This edited collection provides a theoretical and empirical exploration of the links between unfree labor, intermediation, and modes of regulation, with particular focus on the evolving institutional forms and political-economic contexts that have been implicated in, and shaped by, the ascendency of temp agencies. Book excerpt: By examining the impact of labor market policies on employees' perceptions of job security, this dissertation seeks to understand the mechanisms through which formal institutions generate confidence and positive expectations among individuals regarding their economic future. The following questions guide my research: Does dismissal protection give employees confidence in the continuity of their jobs? Do unemployment benefits increase employees' confidence of finding a new job and reduce their worries about job loss? In addition to the intended consequences, I also explore the unintended effects of labor market policies. Specifically, I ask: Does the presence of temporary employees affect perceived job security? To what degree do temporary workers mediate the effects of other policies? In the first empirical analysis, I apply multilevel-modeling techniques to a dataset that I created by merging large-scale survey data from individuals in 20 countries with macro-level information from various data sources. The second empirical analysis involves in-depth interview data collected from employees at one German and one American university. The quantitative data allow me to identify associations between national-level policies and perceptions across a large sample of countries, and the qualitative data help me to meaningfully interpret and supplement these results. My main finding is that perceptions are not always congruent with economic and institutional facts. Organizational characteristics and individual differences seem to be more relevant than national-level policies to how workers feel about their jobs. The second important finding is that the effects of policies vary depending on their design. Formal institutions that reduce vulnerability by providing assurance (unemployment benefits) and by establishing a comparison group with lower levels of protection (temporary workers) seem to be more effective in instilling confidence and positive expectations than those that increase the costs for unilateral breach of contract (dismissal protection). These findings are of theoretical importance in challenging the implicit rationality assumption that formal institutions always achieve their intended outcomes, an assumption which underlies the bulk of comparative research on welfare states and national production systems. They are also of practical relevance, as they can help to inform the development of labor market policies and organizational measures intended to increase workers' sense of job security.
