The article, which includes recommendations for management, focuses on the environment for frontline workers and includes creating a flexible workplace as well as implementing best practices for intentionally engaging employees in decision making and problem solving. The article has global relevance for staff retention and job satisfaction issues.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between executive servant leadership and job satisfaction in human service nonprofit organizations in southwest Virginia. The problem to be addressed was the leadership deficit in nonprofit organizations and the ability of nonprofit leaders to motivate employees to perform. This study was significant because the leadership is a critical success factor for nonprofit organizations, however, the nonprofit sector is confronting a situation of leadership deficit. There is limited research on effective leadership strategies for nonprofit organizations. This study serves as new research for effective leadership practices and their relationship to employee motivation for nonprofit organizations. The researcher applied a self-reporting questionnaire framework to measure the independent and dependent variables. The Job Satisfaction Survey was used to measure the dependent variable of employee job satisfaction and the Servant Organizational Leadership Assessment was used to measure the independent variable of servant leadership present in an organization. A random sample of 83 full time employees of human service nonprofit organizations in southwest Virginia participated in the study. The results of this study found a moderate-strong positive statistically significant relationship between servant leadership present in an organization and employee job satisfaction. The results of this study contribute to nonprofit leadership practices as the results indicate servant leadership does lead to increased employee job satisfaction and nonprofit leaders should seek to understand how implementing servant leadership practices into their own leadership will benefit their employees. Biblically, just as man is created with a purpose to serve others through Jesus Christ, business leaders also exist with a purpose to serve.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to establish a measurement scale for human resource management (HRM) practices in nonprofit organizations and to analyze their impact on employee job satisfaction. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using a principal components was performed. The analyzed sample is composed of 62 organizations with 2,030 employees. The results demonstrate that 8 out of 20 analyzed variables determine the measurement scale of HRM practices in these organizations. These variables are related to psychological demands, active work and development possibilities, social relations and leadership, and the degree of coherence in the organization with its principles. According to the results, these practices have an impact on employee job satisfaction. We believe that these results are relevant due to the lack of similar studies and the relevance of nonprofit organizations as job creators in the European Union.

Book excerpt: Non-profit firms are often seen as workplaces where people not only work for money, but also find substantial satisfaction in the kind of work they do. Studies looking at compensating wage differentials, however, have only found limited support for this notion. In this paper, a novel approach is undertaken to compare the utilities of non-profit and for-profit employees, by using measures of job satisfaction. The results show that in both the United States and Great Britain over the 1990's, non-profit workers were generally more satisfied with their jobs than for-profit workers. The robustness of the results is explored in detail, and implications for the governance of non-profit firms are shortly discussed.

Understanding the link between work-related attitudes and behavior is an important issue that can provide essential insight for the selection of appropriate management practices. In particular, one study of voluntary service organizations (Macy, 2006) suggests that nonprofit organizations depend on personal values for motivation. Although there are many dimensions to values, this research focuses on the dimension of indivdiualism versus collectivism to the degree that it makes assumptions regarding the nature of work and the status of individuals. Tehre are three value perspectives that are the focus of this study: Individual, Collective, and Humanistic. The purpose of this study is to determine the significance of these three value perspectives, how each influences the nonprofit employee to choose to work in the nonprofit sector, and how these value perspectives might in turn influence job satisfaction and future turnover intentions. This research provides important insights on how values alone can impact one's perception of work and influence worker outcomes.
