Book Synopsis Native and Non-Native English Speaking Teachers in China by : Zheng Huang
Download or read book Native and Non-Native English Speaking Teachers in China written by Zheng Huang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-02 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the responses of Chinese English teachers (CETs) and learners to the Native English-Speaking Teacher/Non-Native English-Speaking Teacher (NEST/NNEST) issue by examining the self-perceptions of Chinese English teachers, the perceptions of Chinese learners, and the real practices of the two groups of teachers in the classroom. It reveals how Chinese students’ and teachers’ perceptions are influenced by the combined forces of Chinese traditional culture and globalization, how Chinese English teachers’ classroom practices reflect their perceptions, and how Chinese English teachers struggle to (re)construct their professional identity as English teachers in the dominant ideology and disempowering discourse of native-speakerism. The findings also shed light on the impacts of globalization on Chinese English teachers’ professional identity and provide ways to empower them as English language teaching professionals. This book will appeal to a broad readership, including foreign-language teachers – especially NNESTs – around the world, graduate students majoring in sociolinguistics, and scholars of globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the academic characteristics, career development, and impacts of “foreignness” of Chinese overseas returnees in research universities. It provides valuable insights into the international mobility of academics and the challenges and opportunities that returnee scholars face in terms of research, teaching, international exchange, income, academic promotion, job satisfaction, and career mobility in their academic careers. Using first-hand large-scale survey data, the author presents quantitative analyses of the international mobility of Chinese academics at the individual level. She evaluates the impact of overseas experience on academic career development, and further proposes practical policy suggestions to attract and retain returnee talent in academia in China. The book’s findings have important implications for policy-makers, university administrators, and academics who seek to address the challenges and opportunities of international academic careers and promote the internationalization of research universities in China and beyond.

Book Synopsis Teacher Voices in Chinese Language Teaching by : Scott Smith
Download or read book Teacher Voices in Chinese Language Teaching written by Scott Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the results of an ethnographic study, focusing primarily on the experiences of four teachers of the Chinese language in Australian secondary schools. The author creates an audience for their voices as they reflect on their own understandings of culture, language teaching, and culture in language teaching through semi-structured interviews, and compares these reflections with written stimulus dialogues designed to elicit 'culture-in-language' reflections, as well as curriculum and policy documents produced by the Australian government. The book's findings indicate that teachers of the Chinese language are diverse in their views on culture, language teaching, and the ways in which culture can or should inform language teaching, and the author argues that language teacher intercultural competence cannot be assessed through a synthesis of the current English-only research literature. This book will be of interest to teachers and teacher trainers of Chinese as a foreign language, as well as students and scholars of applied linguistics and language education more broadly.
