A survey was designed to collect demographic data and measure 12 facets of job satisfaction. Pharmacy job satisfaction, Air Force job satisfaction, and role ambiguity were the dependent variables measured. Response rates were 82% for pharmacists and 59% for technicians. Results indicated pharmacists were satisfied with all facets of job satisfaction measured. Multiple regression indicated specific job motivators (ability utilization, work challenge, goals and plans, policies and practices, and staffing) accounted for 43.1% of the variance in pharmacists' job satisfaction. Pharmacists in management positions were more satisfied than staff pharmacists. Technicians were satisfied with most job satisfaction facets measured, including overall pharmacy job satisfaction. However, the technicians were dissatisfied with their compensation.

Job satisfaction was measured using a modified four-page questionnaire originally developed and validated by Barnett and Kimberlin in 1983. Of the 140 mailed, deliverable questionnaires, 107 usable responses were received for a response rate of 79.3 percent. The data was analyzed using nonparametric statistics. The results of this study suggest that Army, pharmacists are satisfied with their jobs and careers, and that job satisfaction is positively related to their clinical pharmacy training.

Pharmacists providing patient care scored significantly higher relative to pharmacists not providing patient care on satisfaction items constituting the factor 'pharmacy services provided'. On the other hand, no significant difference was found between groups for satisfaction with pay, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, or effective communication among nurses, physicians and pharmacists. The findings are discussed relative to job satisfaction and enrichment.
