It makes him supreme among all other creatures of earth. A child’s brain although a natural gift, needs to be shaped and well directed for living an agreeable, calm and contingent life. The practice which carries out this reward is what we mark as education. Education trends and carves him for humanity. There are usually two characteristics of human life: one is natural or biological and the other one is socio- cultural or spiritual. Man envisaged in terms of his biological subsistence alone is no better than an animal. His biological subsistence is secured through food, shelter and reproduction. But human life can never be limited to its biological existence alone. Man’s life can only be overvalued by education and it is only the cultural or social feature of human life which specifies his ultimate place and thus composes the splendid work of Almighty creator.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: 3.4, University of Jos (National Teacher's Institute), course: Post graduate diploma in Education, language: English, abstract: The study investigated teachers’ motivation and its effect on teachers’ performance in Nigeria using a descriptive survey research design. Thirty teachers and 50 students were randomly selected from three government secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. Data was collected using a well-structured questionnaire. Responses were presented using descriptive statistics and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistical method to confirm the hypotheses generated for the study at 5% probability level. The findings of this study reveal that there is a significant relationship between teachers’ remuneration and quality teaching in Nigeria. Based on the findings of this research study, teachers' remuneration significantly affect both extrinsic and intrinsic motivating factors, increased teacher absenteeism, teachers-students interpersonal relationships as well as commitment to work, consequently contributing to dwindling educational quality and academic performance of primary school students. As such, highly-motivated, well-trained and professionally supported teachers are crucial for an effective education system in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: Teacher Motivation: Theory and Practice provides a much needed introduction to the current status and future directions of theory and research on teacher motivation. Although there is a robust literature covering the theory and research on student motivation, until recently there has been comparatively little attention paid to teachers. This volume draws together a decade of work from psychological theorists and researchers interested in what motivates people to choose teaching as a career, what motivates them as they work with students in classrooms, the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic forces on career experiences, and how their motivational profiles vary at different stages of their career. With chapters from leading experts on the topic, this volume provides a critical resource not only for educational psychologists, but also for those working in related fields such as educational leadership, teacher development, policy makers and school psychology.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are called nation builders in every country and in every society. The role of teachers is of great importance. It is left to the teachers to inculcate personality characteristics, right values – the values of good citizenship producing law abiding and nation loving citizens. India has made considerable progress in school education since independence with reference to overall literacy, infrastructure and universal access and enrolment in schools. Two major developments in the recent years form the background to the present reform in teacher education – the political recognition of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) as a legitimate demand and the state commitment towards UEE in the form of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The country has to address the need of supplying well qualified and professionally trained teachers in larger numbers in the coming years. At the same time, the demand for quality secondary education is steadily increasing. It is recommended that the aim should be to reach universal secondary education within a maximum of ten years. Given the problems of inadequate quality in most secondary schools due to poor infrastructure and insufficient and poorly equipped teachers, the need for addressing the professional education of secondary teachers acquires great importance. The education of teachers should be such that teachers should set an example and provide for their pupils the ideal of the citizens who is conformist, conservative and cautions. As for their moral character, righteousness, wisdom, honesty are among the adjectives which might be ascribed to them. Teachers should assist the students in their physical, intellectual, religious, social, emotional, spiritual development in the well balanced and harmonious manner and imbue them with human values, which is why teacher education today is an integral part of any educational system. In this study, personality traits of teachers will be analyzed in conjunction with their teaching effectiveness, in order to reach a better understanding of what makes a good teacher, and how to educate him to satisfy the rising demand of the Indian society.
