But can the all-volunteer force (AVF) continue to attract and retain the quantity and quality of active and reserve forces required to meet the security needs of the nation? Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report summarizes findings from the Spring 1995 Sample Survey Military Personnel (SSMP) which focused on soldier satisfaction with aspects of their Army life, jobs, and careers. A total of 15,113 soldiers responded to the survey. There were few if any differences between males and females in their responses to items on Stress, Promotion Potential, and Global Satisfaction (job/career/life). Females were more positive in their responses to items covering Benefits, Family, Equity, Basic Pay, Job Security (officers only), and Job Characteristics (enlisted only). Males were more positive in their responses to items covering Co-Workers. Supervisors, leeadership, Developmental Courses (more likely to have bad courses), and Absence from Duty Station for Military Reasons (more likely to be deployed/TDY/in training). Results from the survey did not identily any clear cut relationships between job satisfaction and career intent for males or females; however, it does appear that separation from family may be an important factor in why some female soldiers decide to leave the Army."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Although diversity is a twentieth-century term, as the United States continues through the twenty-first century, the issue of diversity in society and in organizations is becoming more complex. Managing Diversity in the Military addresses current equal opportunity and diversity issues and explores how the military is attempting to resolve them. The research presented reflects interests of scholars from various backgrounds who use different models, approaches, and methodologies, many of which are adapted from the study of civilian institutions. The work is divided into five sections ""Contemporary Approaches to Managing Diversity,"" ""Diversifying Leadership: Equity in Evaluation and Promotion,"" ""Gender Integration and Sexual Harassment,"" ""Military Discipline and Race,"" and ""Where Do We Go from Here?"" which proposes future research directions for equal opportunity and diversity management in the armed forces. All of the areas explored in this accessibly written volume have counterparts in the civilian sector. The book offers insights, practical methodologies, and effective management guidelines for commanders, civilian-sector executives, and human resource practitioners responsible for equal opportunity programs and outcomes. This is now the standard social research tool in an area of profound practical concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We put the working class, in all its varieties, at the center of our work. The new working-class studies is not only about the labor movement, or about workers of any particular kind, or workers in any particular place—even in the workplace. Instead, we ask questions about how class works for people at work, at home, and in the community. We explore how class both unites and divides working-class people, which highlights the importance of understanding how class shapes and is shaped by race, gender, ethnicity, and place. We reflect on the common interests as well as the divisions between the most commonly imagined version of the working class—industrial, blue-collar workers—and workers in the 'new economy' whose work and personal lives seem, at first glance, to place them solidly in the middle class."—from the Introduction In John Russo and Sherry Lee Linkon's book, contributors trace the origins of the new working-class studies, explore how it is being developed both within and across fields, and identify key themes and issues. Historians, economists, geographers, sociologists, and scholars of literature and cultural studies introduce many and varied aspects of this emerging field. Throughout, they consider how the study of working-class life transforms traditional disciplines and stress the importance of popular and artistic representations of working-class life.
