Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of job satisfaction of western Massachusetts physical therapists in relation to their perception of the quality care provided to patients. Four hundred western Massachusetts licensed physical therapists were surveyed. A total of 134 subjects returned the questionnaire for a response rate of 33.5 percent (X age=38.2 +/- 9.1 years), 88.1 percent were females and 11.9 percent were male. Seventy point nine percent of respondents held Bachelor's degrees, 21.6 percent of subjects reported having Master's degrees and seven point five percent of subjects attained specialty certification. Subjects were questioned for level of job satisfaction through the use of the Job Description Index (JDI)/Job In General (JIG) testing instruments. The quality of care delivered was measured through the use of the Quality of Care Index developed from previous research. Descriptive and demographic analysis was completed for the data. Ninety-two point eight percent of therapists surveyed reported satisfaction with their current job. Ninety-six point two percent of therapists reported they were pleased or greatly pleased with the quality of care they provided. Spearman Rank Order Rho Correlation Coefficients and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficients were calculated. A significant (r, = .4020, p = .00) positive linear relationship was found between perception of quality care provided and job satisfaction among western Massachusetts physical therapists. The researchers concluded that as a physical therapist's perception of quality care increases, their job satisfaction also increases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Job satisfaction is important for life satisfaction as well as for quality of patient care. There are many identified factors that are correlated with both satisfaction and dissatisfaction in physical therapy (PT). One of the factors creating dissatisfaction in the field of PT may be educational debt load. As the requirements for degree confirmation and the cost of education have increased, students graduate with greater amounts of debt. Evidence in the medical literature suggestes that physicians and other health care professionals pursue specialties often because of the influence of salary potential. Working in higher paying settings may not produce the same degree of satisfaction, if the decision is based primarily on financial considerations only. Purpose: To explore job satisfaction in the field of physical therapy and investigate if an how much educational debt load is factor. Methods: This study was a mixed method, two-party study design. Phase I was an electronic survey, 1,060 surveys were completed and analyzed. Phase II was qualitative study consisting of a telephone interview, in which 24 PTs from acute care, skilled nursing, and outpatient orthopedics were interviewed. Individuals with either high debt or low debt, high satisfaction or low satisfaction were all represented. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) and a visual analog scale (VAS) were used to assess satisfaction levels. Results: JSS and VAS were found to have a strong correlation with each other. Demographic factors, including debt, showed little correlation or predictive ability with either satisfaction measure. Qualitatively, all PTs interviewed were highly concerned with the increasing educational debt load students assume. Several primary and lower order themes emerged as satisfaction related to debt: education, work, and financial. Conclusions: Educational debt load was a major concern for all interviewed, whether they had debt or not. Experienced therapists that may have had very little initial debt or more significant amounts of debt but have paid it off were often more concerned than newer therapists that have significantly large amounts of debt. Debt did not appear to significantly influence choice of specialty or location of work for most people. Debt was not a strong indicator or greater or lesser degrees of satisfaction.

Book excerpt: This project is a case study on the vertical and horizontal occupational structures of physical therapy and how gender attitudes on opportunities can influence one's workplace satisfaction. The theoretical perspective is based upon a gendered organizational theory and organizational justice operating in a latent manner through gendered opportunities on workplace satisfaction. Horizontal segregation (location and specialty) has been linked to gender essentialism, while vertical hierarchy (work continuity, earnings, and supervisory duties) has also been linked to male primacy. Workers' perceived attitudes about opportunities for women (promotions and jobs) can potentially influence the outcome of job satisfaction. The 2004 Physical Therapy Labor Force Survey was examined for potential bias using a sample of physical therapists (PTs) from the 2000 US Census PUMS 5 percent sample. Using the 2004 survey data for salaried PTs, two dependent variables were generated via factor analysis (intrinsic rewards and well-being) from a 10-item workplace attitudes scale. Regression analyses on these models by gender revealed specific associations among the explanatory variables and the workplace attitude factors. Women who selected the response "promotion opportunities worse for women" on average had lower intrinsic reward and well-being factor scores (compared to those selecting no difference). Yet, men who chose "job opportunities better for women" on average had lower well-being scores (compared to men reporting no difference); this was not shown to be the case for intrinsic rewards for men. In general, the results of this research suggest that female respondents with the perception that women have less chance for promotion than men tended to lower their job satisfaction. However, male respondents who perceived that women have a greater chance of jobs than men tended to have reduced job satisfaction scores. The results for women were in both domains of satisfaction (intrinsic rewards and well-being), whereas those for men were only for well-being. Job satisfaction is affected by the social structure (vertical and horizontal), gender, and attitudes about opportunities in physical therapy associations among the explanatory variables and the workplace attitude factors.
