Angola's liberation struggle (1961-1974) effectively came to an end when a military coup overthrew the government in Portugal. But when Angola was granted independence in 1975, divisions between the liberation movements plunged the country into what was to become Africa's most protracted civil war (finally ending in 2002). 'The Borderlands' explores the idea of a militarised landscape. But rather than spaces associated with the usual apparatus of South Africa's military, it looks at other sites intricately connected to the war.
