Book excerpt: "The human body is the deadliest weapon ever created. It can squat, bend, press, pull, rotate, sprint, hit, and kick on command without the need of an external attachments. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a software update that teaches you how to properly use the tools you were born with. In the words of Grand Master Helio Gracie, "What the Samurai did with their swords, we do with our hands." The Samurai knew the importance of keeping their swords sharp and conditioned for peak performance in battle. This is why it is important to supplement resistance training with Jiu-Jitsu. The techniques are very important, but maintaining a healthy, strong body will not only assist the technique, it will also create the resilience needed to combat injuries. In this book, I will show you how to build training systems with exercises that directly translate into the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. Technique will usually beat strength, but we have all been smashed and picked apart by a meathead with a lighter belt. Why not have the best of both worlds?"Jits-Fit: The Grappler's Guide to Fitness is the instruction manual for developing a body built for battle. The movements and content within these pages will build both physical and mental strength, endurance, and skill. I wrote this book because I was sick of looking for it. I needed this book when I went from being an expert gym rat to a wide eyed white belt. My body just did not want to move the in the ways of the experienced grapplers and I hated not being good at something. Not being able to defend myself and not being able to learn the techniques because of my rigid training style. So instead of continuing to search for the book that I could not find, I decided to write the damn thing. This is my way of giving back to the Jiu-Jitsu community that has had, and continues to have, a profoundly positive impact on my life. If you have ever stepped on the mat, then you know that you are a part of a family. And if you have never had the pleasure, I encourage you to find an academy because you have no idea what you are missing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two or three decades, research in cognitive science and psychology has yielded an improved understanding of the fundamental psychological nature of knowledge and cognitive skills that psychological testing attempts to measure. These theories have reached sufficient maturity, making it reasonable to look upon them to provide a sound theoretical foundation for assessment, particulary for the content of assessments. This fact, combined with much discontentedness over current testing practices, has inspired efforts to bring testing and cognitive theory together to create a new theoretical framework for psychological testing -- a framework developed for diagnosing learners' differences rather than for ranking learners based on their differences. This volume presents some initial accomplishments in the effort to bring testing and cognitive theory together. Contributors originate from both of the relevant research communities -- cognitive research and psychometric theory. Some represent collaborations between representatives of the two communities; others are efforts to reach out in the direction of the other community. Taking fundamentally different forms, psychometric test theory assumes that knowledge can be represented in terms of one or at most a few dimensions, whereas modern cognitive theory typically represents knowledge in networks -- either networks of conceptual relationships or the transition networks of production systems. Cognitively diagnostic assessment is a new enterprise and it is evident that many challenging problems remain to be addressed. Still, it is already possible to develop highly productive interactions between assessment and instruction in both automated tutoring systems and more conventional classrooms. The editors hope that the chapters presented here show how the reform of assessment can take a rigorous path.

Book excerpt: No matter where you are in your own spiritual journey, no matter how little you know about the Bible, no matter how busy your schedule, you CAN grow your kids in Christian faith! Parents of faith are the most influential people in the lives of children - more than pastors, Sunday School teachers, youth workers, or teachers. Passing our faith to our kids is the responsibility of the church (home grown faith versus church grown faith). There are certain conditions that parents can intentionally create in the home that will leave a legacy of faith for their childre, grandchildren, and beyond. They include prayer and devotions; family acts of service; caring conversations; and rituals and traditions. Home Grown Faith will encourage and teach parents how they can shape the spiritual future of their kids one day at a time.

It is for the non-specialist, and although it assumes only a little knowledge of statistics and mathematics, those with a deeper understanding will also find it useful. The book is directed at the scientist who wishes to solve his numerical and statistical problems on a programmable calculator, mini-computer or interactive terminal. The volume is also useful for the user of full-scale computer systems in that it describes how the large computer solves numerical and statistical problems. The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with numerical techniques and Part II with statistical techniques. Part III is devoted to the method of least squares which can be regarded as both a statistical and numerical method. The handbook shows clearly how each calculation is performed. Each technique is illustrated by at least one example and there are worked examples and exercises throughout the volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The C3 Corvette’s swooping fenders and unmistakable body style capture the imagination and make it an enduring classic. About a half-million Corvettes were sold between 1968 and 1982, and the unique combination of Shark style, handling, and V-8 performance is revered. Some early C3s, built between 1968 and 1974, are simply too rare and valuable to be modified, particularly the big-block cars. The later Corvettes, built from 1975 to 1982, came with low-compression engines that produced anemic performance. The vast majority of these Corvettes are affordable, plentiful, and the ideal platform for a high-performance build. Corvette expert, high-performance shop owner, and builder Chris Petris shows how to transform a mundane C3 into an outstanding high-performance car. Stock Corvettes of this generation carry antiquated brakes, steering, suspension, and anemic V-8 engines with 165 to 220 hp. He covers the installation of top-quality aftermarket suspension components, LS crate engines, big brakes, frame upgrades, and improved driveline parts. The book also includes popular upgrades to every component group, including engine, transmission, differential, suspension, steering, chassis, electrical system, interior, tires, wheels, and more. Whether you are mildly modifying your Corvette for greater comfort and driveability or substantially modifying it for vastly improved acceleration, braking, and handling, this book has insightful instruction to help you reach your goals. No other book provides as many popular how-to projects to comprehensively transform the C3 Corvette into a 21st-century sports car.
