Book Synopsis Marching to the Mountaintop by : Ann Bausum
Download or read book Marching to the Mountaintop written by Ann Bausum and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1968 the grisly on-the-job deaths of two African-American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee, prompted an extended strike by that city's segregated force of trash collectors. Workers sought union protection, higher wages, improved safety, and the integration of their work force. Their work stoppage became a part of the larger civil rights movement and drew an impressive array of national movement leaders to Memphis, including, on more than one occasion, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King added his voice to the struggle in what became the final speech of his life. His assassination in Memphis on April 4 not only sparked protests and violence throughout America; it helped force the acceptance of worker demands in Memphis. The sanitation strike ended eight days after King's death. The connection between the Memphis sanitation strike and King's death has not received the emphasis it deserves, especially for younger readers. Marching to the Mountaintop explores how the media, politics, the Civil Rights Movement, and labor protests all converged to set the scene for one of King's greatest speeches and for his tragic death. Book Synopsis the golden age of tutankhamun by : zahi hawass
Download or read book the golden age of tutankhamun written by zahi hawass and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tutankhamun has fascinated the world ever since Howard Carter's spectacular discovery of his treasure-filled tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Egypt's leading Egyptologist, Zahi Hawass, here tells the story of this golden king, a short-lived pharaoh who came to the throne of Egypt as a child and died before the age of twenty, and of the royal dynasty that bred him. The reader meets Tutankhamun's grandparents, the Sun King Amenhotep III and his beautiful wife Tiye as well as the boy-king's 'heretic' father, Akhenaten, his stepmother Neferiti, and his half-sisters, the sun-kissed princesses of Amarna. Tutankhamun lived and died during one of the most fascinating periods in Egyptian history; this book provides a window into this extraordinary time of turmoil and treasure." "The Golden Age of Tutankhamun is illustrated, primarily with photographs of objects from the traveling exhibit. "Tutankhamun and the Golden Beyond: Treasures from the Valley of the Kings," which takes objects from Cairo's Egyptian Museum collections to Switzerland and Japan. Many of these photographs were taken by National Geographic photographer Kenneth Garrett, supplemented by archival photographs from the era of the tomb's discovery, a fascinating period of transition - in archaeology as much as politics - between the age of colonialism and the dawn of Egyptian nationalism."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis The Diplomatic History of Postwar Japan by : Makoto Iokibe
Download or read book The Diplomatic History of Postwar Japan written by Makoto Iokibe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the prestigious Yoshida Shigeru Prize 1999 for the best book in public history when it was published in its original Japanese, this book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of Japan’s international relations from the end of the Pacific War to the present. Written by leading Japanese authorities on the subject, it makes extensive use of the most recently declassified Japanese documents, memoirs, and diaries. It introduces the personalities and approaches Japan’s postwar leaders and statesmen took in dealing with a rapidly changing world and the challenges they faced. Importantly, the book also discusses the evolution of Japan’s presence on the international stage and the important – if underappreciated role – Japan has played. The book examines the many issues which Japan has had to confront in this important period: from the occupation authorities in the latter half 1940s, to the crisis-filled 1970s; from the post-Cold War decade to the contemporary war on terrorism. The book examines the effect of the changing international climate and domestic scene on Japan’s foreign policy; and the way its foreign policy has been conducted. It discusses how the aims of Japan’s foreign relations, and how its relationships with its neighbours, allies and other major world powers have developed, and assesses how far Japan has succeeded in realising its aims. It concludes by discussing the current state of Japanese foreign policy and likely future developments.

Book Synopsis To the Ramparts of Infinity by : Jack D. Elliott Jr.
Download or read book To the Ramparts of Infinity written by Jack D. Elliott Jr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before William Faulkner, there was Colonel William C. Falkner (1825–1889), the great-grandfather of the prominent and well-known Mississippi writer. The first biography of Falkner was a dissertation by the late Donald Duclos, which was completed in 1961, and while Faulkner scholars have briefly touched on the life of the Colonel due to his influence on the writer’s work and life, there have been no new biographies dedicated to Falkner until now. To the Ramparts of Infinity: Colonel W. C. Falkner and the Ripley Railroad seeks to fill this gap in scholarship and Mississippi history by providing a biography of the Colonel, sketching out the cultural landscape of Ripley, Mississippi, and alluding to Falkner’s influence on his great-grandson’s Yoknapatawpha cycle of stories. While the primary thrust of the narrative is to provide a sound biography on Falkner, author Jack D. Elliott Jr. also seeks to identify sites in Ripley that were associated with the Colonel and his family. This is accomplished in part within the main narrative, but the sites are specifically focused on, summarized, and organized into an appendix entitled “A Field Guide to Colonel Falkner’s Ripley.” There, the sites are listed along with old and contemporary photographs of buildings. Maps of the area, plotting military action as well as the railroads, are also included, providing essential material for readers to understand the geographical background of the area in this period of Mississippi history.
