"THE first time I heard Jim Maitland's name mentioned was in the bar of a P.&O. We were two days out of Colombo, going East, and when I confessed my complete ignorance of the man a sort of stupefied silence settled on the company. "You don't know Jim?" murmured an Assam tea-planter. "I thought everyone knew Jim." "Anyway, if you stay in these parts long you soon will," put in someone else. "And once known—never forgotten." - H. C. McNeile (Sapper) Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937), commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. After the war McNeile left the army and continued writing, although he changed from war stories to thrillers. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His thrillers are a continuation of his war stories, with upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it.

Book excerpt: 'Jim Maitland' is a novel written by H. C. McNeile—and is one of his best-known works. It follows the adventures of a British globetrotter named Jim Maitland, who McNeile describes as a "footloose sahib of the period". Brilliant and slightly uncanny, Maitland's challenges in this book begins on the Island of Tampico, where through the eyes of Leyton, the book's narrator, we see him in action as he outwits his foes and foils plans to stop him from uncovering the truth.

Book excerpt: Maitland & Standish-Two volumes of 'Sapper's' most memorable action heroes Herman Cyril McNeile (better known to his readers as 'Sapper') was a former soldier and prolific author of adventure and detective fiction. His Bulldog Drummond stories have become classics and have been abidingly popular with enthusiasts of the genre from the time they were first published to the present day. Leonaur has already gathered together the Drummond stories and has now turned its attention to the exploits of two more of Sapper's great characters-monocled, two-fisted adventurer, Jim Maitland and the suave detective, Ronald Standish, whose exploits have been collected in two substantial and complementary volumes. These stories belong to a golden age after the First World War when 'men of the world' threw themselves into danger for the sheer thrill of the 'game'. Through Jim Maitland we experience high adventure across the globe, from burning deserts to steaming jungles (sometimes peopled by fantastical man-beasts). Aficionados of the Bulldog Drummond stories will see him echoed in Maitland in these exciting stories of thrills and desperate gambits. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Herman Cyril McNeile, MC (28 September 1888 - 14 August 1937), commonly known as Cyril McNeile and publishing under the name H. C. McNeile or the pseudonym Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. As serving officers in the British Army were not permitted to publish under their own names, he was given the pen name "Sapper" by Lord Northcliffe, the owner of the Daily Mail; the nickname was based on that of his corps, the Royal Engineers.

Book excerpt: "Maitland Ward joined the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful as a teenager and found fame as the loveable, sexy (but not too sexy) co-ed Rachel McGuire in the later seasons of the beloved ABC sitcom Boy Meets World. Forced into the "good girl" role time and again, she was denied the darker, meatier roles she truly wanted to sink her teeth into. And so she turned away from Disney gold, and eventually established herself as one of the most-respected actresses in porn today. Full of jaw-and panty-dropping anecdotes, as well personal stories from her time on one of the most beloved sitcoms of the '90s, RATED X won't be your run-of-the-mill celebrity memoir. Readers will get to see Hollywood and triple-x stardom up close and personal, and in a whole new light. Her story is not a cautionary tale. It's a story of hope and triumph about a woman who took her desire by the reins, shot to the top of the industry, and has become one of porn's most prominent figures with crossover appeal-all at the age of forty. Sharp, provocative, and unexpected, RATED X is the story of a Disney Princess who-unapologetically-found her fairytale in porn"--
