Book excerpt: The Corpse Walker introduces us to regular men and women at the bottom of Chinese society, most of whom have been battered by life but have managed to retain their dignity: a professional mourner, a human trafficker, a public toilet manager, a leper, a grave robber, and a Falung Gong practitioner, among others. By asking challenging questions with respect and empathy, Liao Yiwu managed to get his subjects to talk openly and sometimes hilariously about their lives, desires, and vulnerabilities, creating a book that is an instance par excellence of what was once upon a time called “The New Journalism.” The Corpse Walker reveals a fascinating aspect of modern China, describing the lives of normal Chinese citizens in ways that constantly provoke and surprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before Tai Chi and Qigong became household names in the West, an American sailor visiting Shanghai discovered a gentle Chinese exercise called Jiangan - The Chinese Health Wand. This exercise system is simple yet potent and involves the manipulation of a lightweight pole traditionally made of bamboo. Jiangan co-ordinates slow diaphragmatic breathing with graduated stretching and strengthening exercises to promote circulation and stimulate the cardiovascular system. This book offers a concise practical guide to Jiangan exercises, providing detailed instructions and illustrations while also exploring the Chinese philosophy behind the art. Although a gentle and meditative form of exercise, the book shows that Jiangan has the muscle-toning and weight-loss potential of more robust gym workouts and is an ideal daily exercise routine or warm-up for a range of sports and martial arts classes. This book will be a valuable resource for teachers and students of Tai Chi and Qigong, as well as anyone looking for a simple and effective way to improve health and fitness using Eastern health arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, object-oriented programming is emerging from the research labora tories and invading into the field of industrial applications. More and more products have been implemented with the aid of object-oriented programming techniques and tools, usually as extensions of traditional languages in hybrid development systems. Some of the better known examples are OSF-Motif, News, Objective-C on the NeXT computer, the C extension C++, and CLOS an object oriented extension of LISP. All of these developments incorporate interactive graphics. Effective object-oriented systems in combination with a graphics kernel does it mean that the field of computer graphics has now become merely an aspect of the object-oriented world? We do not think so. In spite of interesting individual developments, there are still no sound object-oriented graphics sys tems available. If it is desired to develop a complex graphics application embed ded in a window-oriented system then it is still necessary to work with elemen tary tools. What is to be displayed and interactively modified inside a window must be specified with a set of graphics primitives at a low level, or has to be written with a standardized graphics kernel system such as GKS or PHIGS, i. e. , by kernels specified and implemented in a non-object-oriented style. With the terms GKS and PHIGS we enter the world of international graphics standards. GKS and PHIGS constitute systems, not mere collections of graphics primitives.

Book excerpt: A unique and comprehensive book on display metrology written by a leading expert in this field Many think that it is a simple matter to characterize a display but they are more complicated than anticipated because of the legitimate limitations of the instrumentation that often go unnoticed to the novice. There are many pitfalls and problems that can lead to huge errors in obtaining good measurement results. Display Metrology will alert readers to the problems in making measurements on displays, and it will help them avoid these mistakes. Cover the problems encountered in making display measurements from microdisplays to wall and projection displays. Written by an author with extensive experience in this field: serves as the editor of the upcoming new measurement standard of the ICDM (International Committee for Display Metrology) as well as one of its main authors; and continues to provide a short course on the topic. Places a special emphasis on avoiding the pitfalls in display measurement. Introduces the complex system of units used in radiometry, photometry and colorimetry; providing tutorial problems to show how those quantities are used in calculation. Includes reflection measurements and measurements on 3D displays - both these topics are newly developed for the International Display Measurement Standard, and will be dealt with in detail in book form for the first time.
