Book excerpt: Large format, six-volume set "Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities" is a multi-year project, researched by the South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth. Concisely written by a team of researchers with another team collecting photographs, each of the volumes in this projected series of six books focuses on specific regions and the Jewish communities therein. The researchers visited major libraries and archives, as well as smaller research facilities, all over South Africa. They conducted oral interviews with many present and past residents and used the proverbial fine-toothed comb to search the back issues of the London Jewish Chronicle and other historical papers for relevant items. The aim of this research is to have a permanent record of the Jewish communities in the dorps (country towns) of South Africa.

Book excerpt: There is a group of Jews in South Africa that has been almost overlooked by local Jewish organisations. In fact they are not even viewed as an entity, but rather as an aggregate of individuals whose number is unknown. These are the Russian-speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union- South African Jewry's 'lost tribe'. Unlike Israel, Germany or the United States, South Africa did not experience the influx of hundreds of thousands of Soviet and post-Soviet Jews in the 1970s to 1990s. That is probably a reason why neither researchers nor journalists has ever considered them as a South African phenomenon. In addition, unlike those Jews from the ex-USSR in Israel, Germany or the United States, in South Africa they have not formed their own communities and do not play a prominent part in the existing ones. In fact, they usually appear to be unwilling to involve themselves with South African Jewish organisations. They keep their distance and are not as religious or Zionist as their locally-born counterparts and are generally not community oriented. To some observers they may even appear to be more Russian than Jewish. Generally speaking, ex-USSR emigres are not clearly bound to their Jewish identity. They might be Jews but do they manifest any 'Jewishness'?

Book excerpt: Into Kokerboom Country tells the story, with many fascinating historical photographs previously unpublished, of the Jewish pioneers who, like the kokerboom, dug their roots into the sandy soil of Namaqualand. They transformed their situation from penniless immigrants to established citizens and in the process left 'diep spore' in this remote and isolated region of South Africa. It is a chronicle about a small group of immigrants who sought freedom and economic opportunity in a remote and arid corner of South Africa. Their determination to succeed in carving out a life for themselves and their families is described in a history spanning 120 years, from the mid-1850s to the late 1970s. The Namaqualand Jewish story epitomises the trials, triumphs, challenges and joys of so many Jewish communities throughout the country, and indeed the world. It celebrates the rich cultural history and moral substance of these early pioneers, who remained committed to their Jewish traditions under extremely difficult circumstances. With evocative photographs, original research and colourful memoirs, this is an extraordinary account of courage, fortitude and acculturation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deals with attitudes of the white population of South Africa towards Jews between 1885-1940. Contends that antisemitism in South Africa in that period did not come from Europe, nor was it a result of Nazi propaganda. White South Africa had anti-Jewish stereotypes of its own. Popular aversion was directed primarily against the Eastern European immigrant, who was depicted as a dirty peddler, shunning menial work and trying to outwit farmers and city workers. Later, this image was supplemented by stereotypes of cosmopolitan financiers, and was characterized by a sense of "otherness" on both the physical and cultural levels; in a later period Jews were cast in an essentially racial mold. The 1930s added to this kind of antisemitism a new, programmatic one, whose exponents were the extremist Malan wing of the National Party and some extremist organizations. In the 1940s-50s antisemitism in South Africa subsided; it never played a significant role in the country's inner life and politics.
