Book excerpt: THIS is the first volume of the 'Translations of Early Documents' now being issued under the general editorship of Dr. Oesterley and Canon Box, and Dr. Cowley's contribution begins the first series of these translations, comprising pre-Rabbinic Palestinian Jewish texts. The documents in this attractive and well-printed little volume represent the more important of those papyri (covering the fifth century BC.) discovered at Elephantiné or at Assuan between 1898 and 1908-a fruitful decade in archaeological discovery and research. Some doubt has here and there been expressed as to their genuineness'; for example, the Laudian Professor of Arabic is frankly skeptical. The majority of experts, however, after close and continued scrutiny have accepted these remarkable papyri as genuine 'records contemporary with the events to which they relate'; and the student who reads the first page of Dr. Cowley's interesting introduction will find his imagination kindling as he reads that 'No. 5 was rolled up, tied and sealed in 471 B.C., and was not opened again till 1904 in the Bodleian Library at Oxford.' The Church Quarterly Review was one of the first periodicals to introduce to English readers, with some fullness, the more interesting of these papyri. The documents in the present volume (several of them not hitherto translated) are mainly business agreements, deeds, letters, reports; but they also include portions of the story of Ahikar and of the Behistun Inscription. The historical Ezra was sent to Jerusalem as an emissary of the Persian monarch. What was his task? According to the Bible, the Persian king sent Ezra to bring the Torah, the five books of the Laws of Moses, to the Jews. Modern scholars have claimed not only that Ezra brought the Torah to Jerusalem, but also that he actually wrote it, and in so doing Ezra created Judaism. Without Ezra, they say, Judaism would not exist. In Ezra and the Law in History and Tradition, Lisbeth S. Fried separates historical fact from biblical legend. Drawing on inscriptions from the Achaemenid Empire, she presents the historical Ezra in the context of authentic Persian administrative practices and concludes that Ezra, the Persian official, neither wrote nor edited the Torah, nor would he even have known it. The origin of Judaism, so often associated with Ezra by modern scholars, must be sought elsewhere. After discussing the historical Ezra, Fried examines ancient, medieval, and modern views of him, explaining how each originated, and why. She relates the stories told about Ezra by medieval Christians to explain why their Greek Old Testament differs from the Hebrew Bible, as well as the explanations offered by medieval Samaritans concerning how their Samaritan Bible varies from the one the Jews use. Church Fathers as well as medieval Samaritan writers explained the differences by claiming that Ezra falsified the Bible when he rewrote it, so that in effect, it is not the book that Moses wrote but something else. Moslem scholars also maintain that Ezra falsified the Old Testament, since Mohammed, the last judgment, and Heaven and Hell are revealed in it. In contrast Jewish Talmudic writers viewed Ezra both as a second Moses and as the prophet Malachi. The Aramaic papyri discovered at Assuan have shed new and unexpected light on the life of the Jews in Syene in the south of Egypt in the fifth century B. C. E., and the cuneiform tablets unearthed in the ruins of Nuffar acquaint us partly with the life of the Jews in Nippur in the south of Babylonia in the same period. For the last few years I have felt that these Babylonian contract-tablets are very important from the point of view of Jewish history, and that the Jewish material which is contained in them deserves thorough and full investigation.
