Download or read book States of Decadence written by Guri Barstad and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States of Decadence is a two volume anthology that focuses on the literary and cultural phenomenon of decadence. Particular attention is given to literature from the end of the 1800s, the fin de siècle; however, the essays presented here are not restricted to this historical period, but draw lines both back in time and forward to our day to illuminate the contradictory multiplicity inherent in decadence. Furthermore, the essays go beyond literary studies, drawing on a number of the tropes and themes of decadence manifested in the arts and culture, such as in music, opera, film, history, and even jewelry design.

Download or read book Bonobos written by Brian Hare and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bonobo, along with the chimpanzee, is one of our two closest living relatives. Their relatively narrow geographic range (south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo) combined with the history of political instability in the region, has made their scientific study extremely difficult. In contrast, there are dozens of wild and captive sites where research has been conducted for decades with chimpanzees. Because data sets on bonobos have been so hard to obtain and so few large-scale studies have been published, the majority of researchers have treated chimpanzee data as being representative of both species. However, this misconception is now rapidly changing. With relative stability in the DRC for over a decade and a growing community of bonobos living in zoos and sanctuaries internationally, there has been an explosion of scientific interest in the bonobo with dozens of high impact publications focusing on this fascinating species. This research has revealed exactly how unique bonobos are in their brains and behavior, and reminds us why it is so important that we redouble our efforts to protect the few remaining wild populations of this iconic and highly endangered great ape species.
Book Synopsis The Shared Space of Play by : Francesca Berti
Download or read book The Shared Space of Play written by Francesca Berti and published by LIT Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The similarities between traditional games in different regions of the world, from past to present, arouse both awe and curiosity. The playful - yet educational - discovery of these practices offers the opportunity to observe the experience of play as a space for similarities between cultures. When research on play conducted with children is enriched by the recollections of play from parents and grandparents, especially in the context of a multicultural classroom, a choral narrative emerges, laying down the basis for intercultural education. Children discover the 'shared space of play', where they can meet and relish, together with teachers, the richness of cultural diversity, and also learn more about prejudice and Othering processes.

Within their social role libraries should work actively to reduce age segregation and isolation, and build cohesive society through intergenerational services and programmes. The authors speak about the intergenerational dialogue in libraries - theories, research and practice - and about reading as a link between generations, thus offering to libraries strategies for establishing social cohesion.
