Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative work is an introduction to Christian theology with a difference. Not only does it interpret, with clarity and energy, fundamental Christian beliefs but it also shows how and why these beliefs arose, promoting an understanding of theological reflection that encourages readers to think theologically themselves. From Irenaeus and Aquinas to Girard, from Augustine to Zizioulas and contemporary feminist thought, Divine Teaching explores the ways in which major thinkers in the Christian tradition have shaped theology through the wide variety of their encounters with God. It makes theological study adventurous and interactive, not necessarily requiring a faith commitment from all, but allowing readers a thoughtful involvement in the subject that takes seriously the Christian vision of God as the ultimate teacher of theology. Divine Teaching: An Introduction to Christian Theology is an imaginative and lively analysis of the Christian way of thinking, offering vivid and informing insight into the history and practice of Christian theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have come, not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. Of this much I assure you: until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter of the law, not the smallest part of a letter, shall be done away with until it all comes true” (Mt. 5, 17-18). For scholars at the time of Christ and for those who have come after, it has been reasonably clear how the teachings of Christ simply carried on and built upon the law of the prophets. However, Monsignor Kevane’s work, Jesus the Divine Teacher, makes the matter clear in a way which has not so far been achieved. As a learned and recognized Rabbi of his time among the Israelites, Jesus had put Himself into a position where He could most effectively do precisely what He had come to accomplish: to fulfill the law. Jesus the Divine Teacher explains how Christ, in His Divine Wisdom, systematically explained the prophecies of old, built upon them, and gradually brought them to bear upon His basic mission which was to found His church against which the gates of Hell would never prevail. This book, Jesus the Divine Teacher, is the next-to-last in the series of writings which Monsignor Kevane produced during his lifetime. Starting with the textbooks he authored for use at Heelan Catholic High School, Monsignor Kevane was a prolific writer: “The Lord of History,” “Augustine the Educator,” “Creed and Catechetics” – to name a few of his works. I believe there is a theme which lies at the foundation of all his writings and at the foundation of his own spiritual life, that God has been speaking to His people since the dawn of mankind, through His prophets, through His Divine Son, Jesus Christ, who came among us to fulfill the prophets, and through the Church which He founded to protect and pass on this Divine Message to His people until the end of time.

Book excerpt: How can you improve your effectiveness as teachers? Essentially, it is by imitating THE GREAT TEACHER: Jesus Christ. You may wonder, 'But how can we imitate Jesus?' 'He was the perfect, divine, Son of God.' Admittedly, you cannot be a perfect teacher. Nevertheless, regardless of your abilities, you can do your best to imitate the way Jesus taught. THE GREAT TEACHER: Jesus Christ will discuss how you can employ all of his teaching methods. When it comes to teaching, genuine Christians have a special responsibility. We are commanded to "make disciples of all nations . . . , teaching them." [Matt. 24:14; 28:19-20; Ac 1:8] Within the congregation, Scripturally qualified men are to serve as "shepherds and teachers," to build up the body of Christ (congregation). (Eph. 4:11-13) 'Women work together with men in spreading the good news.' (Phil. 4:2-3, CEV; Ac 18:26) All of us are urged to encourage fellow believers, and we can heed that admonition by using the Bible to build up others. (1 Thess. 5:11) All of us can share in saving some fellow brothers or sisters who may have begun to doubt. (Jude 1:3, 22-23) All of us are obligated to defend the truth. (1 Pet 3:15) What a privilege it is to be a teacher of God's Word and to share spiritual values that can have long-lasting benefits!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian presence in education has never been more controversial. While some secularists oppose any form of religious involvement in schools or universities, some Christians also wonder why the churches are there. Conflicting narratives surround the purpose of Christian involvement in education. Yet at the heart of Christianity stands an educator, whose passion and resurrection can be understood afresh as learning. But what does it mean to say that Jesus was a teacher? If he was a good teacher, was he also a learner? Is today’s Christian church learning? Can educators help the church to recover a ‘learning Christ’ who places learning at the heart of the Godhead and the church? How could the Christian churches take the educational significance of Jesus more seriously? Christian teachers often find themselves divided between a professional discourse on learning and making progress, and a theological vocabulary which they do not fully own, connecting only sporadically with their professional identity. This book helps educators to treat their teacher identity as a theological resource, rather than an obstacle, and in so doing to discover new insights on Christ which can be of relevance to the wider church and its mission.
