Book excerpt: There is no other wine that is as versatile, as utterly unique in its range and production methods—and, unfortunately, as misunderstood—as sherry. For centuries, sherry was considered one of the world’s great wines, spoken about in the same reverential terms as the finest Bordeaux and Burgundies. But in the last few decades, sherry lost its way—and cheap, cloyingly sweet blends sullied the reputation of what remains one of Spain’s oldest and greatest winemaking traditions. Thankfully, sherry is in the midst of a renaissance. Beloved of sommeliers and bartenders in the craft cocktail community, today sherry is being re-discovered and re-appreciated as an incredible table wine and essential component of many classic cocktails. Sherry is essential reading for wine or spirits professionals looking to incorporate this complex wine into their menu, and for adventurous drink enthusiasts who are on the hunt for something unexpected. With a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the different styles of sherry, how they are made, and the people and places that produce it, Sherry demystifies what can be a confusing (and seemingly contradictory) wine. A thorough buyer’s guide lists top producers and profiles the very best bodegas and wines. And a whole chapter on sherry-based cocktails illuminates a completely different side of sherry, featuring classic recipes like the Tuxedo and Sherry Cobbler, as well as modern creations from the country’s top bartenders (Jim Meehan’s East India Negroni, Derek Brown’s Kojo Cocktail). More than a dozen recipes for tapas and other delicious foods—best eaten alongside a glass of sherry, of course—round out this wonderfully eclectic, engaging, and inspiring collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering the extraordinary diversity of sherry is a monumental journey through oenology, history and culture. But, while it embraces a widely varied range of wines and a unique character, sherry doesn’t need to be a cryptic subject. Its singularity, resulting from more than 1,000 years of history, genuine natural conditions, and knowledge accumulated over centuries by vine-growers and winemakers, can all be explained and understood. César Saldaña is an excellent guide to lead us through the fascinating world of these unique wines. “A book with style and depth, in witty and restrained prose. With a clear didactic vocation, César joins his solid knowledge with the generosity of the wise, all distilled into a delicious concoction of answers and information. A historic book. And there are not many of such kind…” Josep Roca, sommelier and co-owner, Celler de Can Roca “César Saldaña is a terrific writer: confident, engaging, authoritative. Join him in this definitive book, written with all his insider’s knowledge, as he takes us on a journey through the life and times of one of the world’s unique wines”. . Sarah Jane Evans, Master of Wine “This is more than just a book; it is a complete manual of knowledge and reflections about the fascinating world of sherry wines. Moreover, it is penned by César Saldaña, a real authority on this topic and one of its finest and most passionate communicators, which makes it is an essential reference for learning about these wines.” . Carlos González, director de la Guía Peñín “A great book, whose author is someone who knows sherry wines like no one else. In my opinion, it is the best book ever written to learn about these complex and exceptional wines.” Beltrán Domecq, former president of the Regulatory Board of Sherry wines “The reference book for learning, understanding and loving some of the best wines in the world. A wise and aromatic solera that takes us into the magical and brilliant universe of sherry wines.” Manuel Pimentel, editor and former president of the Regulatory Council of Montilla-Moriles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I love wine, and if anything I like more than drinking wine is sharing my knowledge and expertise about it, and this is the third wine related book that I write (see the back to know more about my other books). Although I grew up in Spain, I only discovered sherry in my 30s, and is such a hidden gem, so under valued, and so nice, that it should be shared! The first thing I want to tell you is that the concept most people have about sherry is totally wrong: sherry is not a sweet wine (at least most of them are not), and is not a drink for grandmothers! I will explain why and I will also explain to you why such misconception. You should buy and read this book if you want to know more about sherry, the different types, and how to choose the ones you like more, or which are more likely to go better with you; how to pair the different types of sherry with food, and know a few more things about it. I like good but simple things in life, so expect my book to be simple (and hopefully good), but do not expect to find a lot of technical information: in my experience most people want to get useful knowledge without becoming experts, and nearly everyone loves a book that it is enjoyable and easy to read, so these are my aims. Having said that, for those of you who want to know more, there are several detailed chapters giving the ins and outs of Sherry production. I hope you enjoy it, and that soon you start sharing some of the amazing sherries with your friends. I am writing something about the history of sherry, for those who want to know more, but I am doing so at the end of the book, so that if you are not interested you do not need to read the last chapter. Finally I have listed some of the man Sherry wineries, with some information about them, address, etc. Alfredo de la Casa
