Book Synopsis The Sawdust Pile by : Don Mobley Adams
Download or read book The Sawdust Pile written by Don Mobley Adams and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, Alexander Rumpkin was at the top of his game: he was CEO of America's largest health care organization. His ruthless trampling of people to get there is the story of The Sawdust Pile. Coming of age with two white cousins and a black kid in the segregated South, Alex had none of the tools commonly needed to climb to the top; but he succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams because he allowed nothing and no one to block his path. The Sawdust Pile is a riveting account of boys and the adults they became. Their contradictory relationships are developed with sensitivity and insight-a realistic portrayal of growing up on both sides of the color line in rural Georgia during the forties and fifties. Transitioning to the nineties and modern Atlanta, this story demonstrates with a vengeance that the boys-with all their faults and strengths-were truly 'fathers of the men." ****** A sophisticated critic says: 'This is a fast-paced story of boys becoming men and the lifelong consequences of youthful bonding and conflicts. Elements energizing the characters-competition, survival, domination, love, hatred, loyalty, betrayal, religion, sex, and family-are all in the mix, appearing early in this fascinating world and impacting all that follows. In a highly unusual first novel, the author delivers a bittersweet, provocative probe into the lives of men and women inhabiting The Sawdust Pile-evoking deep emotions, yet satisfying completely." Jeremiah is unwittingly chosen for a great quest that involves wonderful gifts, long life, and grave dangers. It is an adventure almost too fantastic to believe and if not for his journals would have been lost and forgotten long ago.
Book Synopsis Shy of the Squirrel's Foot by : Andy Martrich
Download or read book Shy of the Squirrel's Foot written by Andy Martrich and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jargon Society, a boundary-pushing publisher of poetry and experimental writing, was founded by Jonathan Williams (1929–2008) in 1951. Jargon quickly gained a reputation as the home of the poetic and literary avant-garde, including noted midcentury poets like Charles Olson and Lorine Niedecker. Williams himself looms large in this story as the publisher at Jargon until his death, making this book as much about his life and work as the press he founded, which today operates through the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville, North Carolina. Andy Martrich authors this story in a manner befitting Jargon's ethos of literary experimentation by focusing on the books the Society cataloged but never published. While it's not uncommon for a small press to plan for books that don't make it to publication, Martrich argues that Jargon's incessant financial difficulties, coupled with Williams's impressive network, makes its trail of unfinished projects unique and an ideal way to chronicle the press itself. Using archival research, interviews with volunteers at Jargon, and more, Martrich gives readers not only an intimate look into a Southern press and publisher but also an important history of modern and experimental literature in twentieth-century America. Shy of the Squirrel's Foot includes an epilogue by Anne Midgette, an afterword by Nicole Raziya Fong, and Jargon's complete annotated bibliography, which details every book the press published, compiled in one place for the first time.
