Download or read book Wiganosophy written by Matt Macaulay and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wiganosophy is a social commentary. It blends philosophical discourse with rugby league, and Wigan – and you don’t see a lot of that. Socrates would’ve liked rugby league. He was reputedly an argumentative, awkward and belligerent little man who enjoyed nothing better than poking at authority with a pointy stick. He’d have fitted right in. He would probably even have made a decent hooker. But we’ll never know, because they poisoned him. The philosophers of old have long since gone and, of course, we must posthumously thank them for enlightening us in regard to the true nature of life, the universe and everything. Unfortunately, though, their combined philosophical musings reveal a glaringly obvious omission. They didn’t talk anywhere near enough about rugby league. Or even Wigan. Wiganosophy is a long overdue attempt to redress the balance and fill the gap. It is a philosophical exploration of what it means to be a devoted follower of the Wigan Warriors. Over the course of eight chapters it unravels the complexity of fanaticism one layer at a time until the true nature of the Wigan Warriors fan is laid bare. It’s a bit like playing a game of Pass The Parcel with a cherry and white hooped Egyptian mummy. At the end of the game you are left with a lot of mess on the floor and hopefully some worthy answers. Wiganosophy does not shy away from the difficult questions regarding the nature of the town itself, the club’s reputation or even the status of rugby league as a national sport. Wiganosophy is a philosophical discourse and an honest examination of the nature of the sport, the town and the customs.

Book Synopsis The History of Sweets by : Paul Chrystal
Download or read book The History of Sweets written by Paul Chrystal and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle of confectionaries throughout the centuries—from honeycombs to Haribo. “There is much to get your teeth into within these pages.” —Best of British Magazine We all remember sweets—objects of pure delight and the endless cause of squabbles, fights even, hoarding and swapping; a chance to gorge, suck, crunch, and chew. But they’re by no means just a nostalgic thing of days past, and it’s not only children who love and devour sweets—gobstoppers, bulls eyes, licorice, seaside rock, bubble gum, and the like; grown-ups of all ages are partial to a good humbug, or a lemon sherbet or two—in the car, (annoyingly) at the cinema or while out walking—wherever and whenever, the sweet is there, the sweet delivers and the sweet rarely disappoints. Sweets then are ubiquitous and enduring; they cross age, culture, and gender boundaries and they have been around, it seems, forever. This book tells the story of sweets from their primitive beginnings to their place today as a billion-pound commodity with its sophisticated, seductive packaging and sales, advertising and marketing. It explores the people’s favorites, past and present; but there is also a dark side to sweets—and this book does not shy away from the deleterious effect on health as manifested in obesity, tooth decay, and diabetes. It delves into sweet and candy shops in supermarkets and markets, retro sweet shops, fudge makers, vintage sweets online, sweet manufacturing, chocolate, the grey line between sweets and “medicines” ancient and modern. It goes round the world unwrapping sweets from different countries and cultures and it examines how immigrants from all nations have changed our own sweet world.

Book Synopsis The Eagle and the Rose by : Rosemary Altea
Download or read book The Eagle and the Rose written by Rosemary Altea and published by Vision. This book was released on 2008-11-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In THE EAGLE AND THE ROSE, Rosemary Altea tells the remarkable story of awakening to her psychic gifts as a medium and healer. As simple and honest as the story is remarkable, THE EAGLE AND THE ROSE describes how Rosemary Altea is chosen to be the voice of the spirit world¿how she is taken under the wing of a Native American spirit guide named Grey Eagle and taught to use her astonishing power to heal, go astral-travelling, and perform soul rescue. Grey Eagle calls Rosemary "his Rose" as he helps nurture her gift. In the casebook section of THE EAGLE AND THE ROSE are 10 stories of astonishing impact - how a woman decapitated in a train wreck relives her traumatic death in Rosemary Altea's body in order to adjust to life in the hereafter; how a tragic boating accident is predicted months before the fact by Rosemary Altea on a live radio show; how a dead child convinces his mother that he is safe with relatives on the spirit plane. Behind all these moving communications is Grey Eagle, Rosemary's mentor, constant companion, and friend. His spirit pervades this book as he focuses the spotlight on an important teaching: Life may continue after death, but how we behave on the Earth Plane does count. Grey Eagle elevates the message in this book to a transcendent level. He says, "We are all souls and must treat each other with kindness." We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
