Book Synopsis Indonesia’s Maritime Policy from Independence to 2019 by : Indra Alverdian
Download or read book Indonesia’s Maritime Policy from Independence to 2019 written by Indra Alverdian and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alverdian explores how a distinct national character of maritime governance has influenced the nature of Indonesia's aspiration to go beyond archipelagic towards a maritime nation, through focusing on the intersection between the nation's political culture, historical changes and geopolitical contexts, which gave rise to the primacy of the theme of unity in the nation's discourse. The main theme of this research is the three-pillar framework of the Tanah-Air concept, which includes the political culture of persatuan nasional (national unity), the strategic culture of cakra manggilingan (turning of the times from dark to golden periods), and the geopolitical context of posisi silang dunia (world crossroad position). The findings of this publication indicate the dominant influence of Javanese political culture, philosophy, values, and traditions on the distinct character of Indonesia’s maritime orientation. Specifically, Javanese political philosophy and traditions within each pillar of Tanah-Air have influenced continuity rather than change in the evolution of Indonesia’s maritime policy. This book helps readers understand how the defining theme of unity in national political culture has shaped the evolution of Indonesia’s maritime policy from 1945 to 2019. It illustrates how the continuous influence of the theme of national unity as devised by the political elites through history has addressed the realities of the archipelago’s geography, and it is significant from both an academic and practical policy perspective. A book designed for academics and the general public interested in gaining greater insight and knowledge on Indonesia’s maritime policy and maritime nation aspirations.
Book Synopsis Steering a Middle Course by : Sarwono Kusumaatmadja
Download or read book Steering a Middle Course written by Sarwono Kusumaatmadja and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born with motor impairment, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja grew up with low self-esteem. Yet, within this awkward, shy boy lay a steely resolve to overcome his weaknesses. It was this same resolve that propelled him to study at high school in the United Kingdom, thousands of miles from his native land. Navigating life on his own in the UK forged Sarwono into an independent and resilient individual; one who never flinched in the face of challenges, but also one who never wanted to play the hero either. His unique character and integrity acted like a magnet for opportunities back home in Indonesia. He was chosen to be Chairman of the University Student Council of the Bandung Institute of Technology even though he did not campaign for it. And when he made it into the national parliament, it was at the behest of the military. He then became Secretary General of Golkar, the country’s ruling party, without having to pull any strings. In taking on all the opportunities that came his way, Sarwono remained true to himself, which later meant saying no to President Soeharto when the latter tried to recruit him to be part of his inner circle.
Book Synopsis Managing Conflicts in a Globalizing ASEAN by : Mikio Oishi
Download or read book Managing Conflicts in a Globalizing ASEAN written by Mikio Oishi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the patterns of conflict management in contemporary Southeast Asia. The region has long been characterized by the twin process of state-formation and nation-building, which has been responsible for most of the region’s intrastate and interstate conflicts. While this process is still ongoing, regional conflicts and their management are increasingly affected by globalisation, which not only serves as a new source of, or exacerbating factor to, conflict, but also makes new instruments available for conflict management. Employing the concepts of incompatibility management and mediation regime, the book analyses the management of seven conflicts in the region: the Rohingya crisis and the Kachin conflict in Myanmar, the Khmer Krom conflict in Vietnam, the West Papua conflict in Indonesia, the political conflict in Thailand, the Mekong River conflicts involving five Southeast Asian countries and China and the transboundary haze problem emanating from Indonesia. The efforts to manage each of them are imagined as constituting a mediation regime, and its effectiveness is assessed in terms of good governance. Among the findings of the book is that the measures of manoeuvring around incompatibilities are employed predominantly in managing regional conflicts. In intrastate conflicts, which mostly involve ethnic minorities, the authorities first aim to eliminate, or impose its own position on, ethnic parties. When this strategy proves unsuccessful, they have no choice but manoeuvre around incompatibilities, which may eventually open up a space for mutual learning. In interstate conflicts, the manoeuvring around strategy works in a more straightforward manner, contributing to regional stability. However, the stability is achieved at the cost of local communities and the natural environment, which absorb the incompatibilities in conflict.
Book Synopsis The Conceptual Idea of the Mua’Malat Fiqh Forensic in the Islamic Financial System by : Hailani Muji Tahir PhD
Download or read book The Conceptual Idea of the Mua’Malat Fiqh Forensic in the Islamic Financial System written by Hailani Muji Tahir PhD and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as the platform to educate people at all levels to understand the fundamentals of fiqh processes pertaining especially to the conceptual idea of the globalization of the Mu’amalat fiqh forensic particularly as the guideline for the innovation of various financial products in the Islamic financial system. The main goal of this book is to illustrate the step-by-step procedure on how an arising issue is resolved through fiqh. The heart of all fiqh issues is the identification stage. All arising issues must first be identified whether they fall under the category of qat’iy (definitive) or zanni (speculative), whether they are the matter of usul (roots) or furu’ (branches), and whether they belong under the matter of ittifaq (consensus in agreement) or ikhtilaf (difference in opinion). Once all these have been properly identified, only then can the people in charge proceed with the next step of resolving the said issues. In this current age of world without borders due to globalization, it becomes necessary for experts in the social and Islamic science fields to collaborate together to come up with a solution that simultaneously fulfills both the local and international market demands. Harmonization of these two different disciplines is difficult without proper guidance, and this book primarily strives to achieve that based on the author’s background of expertise and years of experience in solving numerous fiqh issues through this harmonization method.

Book Synopsis Transforming Malaysia by : Anthony Milner
Download or read book Transforming Malaysia written by Anthony Milner and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of Malaysia’s 13th General Election some commentators speak of a sharpening of ethnic politics — with Prime Minister Najib blaming a “Chinese tsunami” for his government’s polling setbacks; others are optimistic about the arrival of a new “non-racialized form of politics” and the emergence of “transethnic solidarity”. This book, which engages with both the race paradigm and its opponents, warns that change is likely to come slowly — but is not impossible. Malaysia’s race paradigm is a man-made ideological construct — one that has been contested in the past, and could realistically be contested in the future. In confronting the continuing challenge of globalization, Malaysians should not neglect the history of ideas — and ideology — as they search for new options.
