Download or read book E-Z French written by Christopher Kendris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for many years as Barron’s Easy Way Series, the new editions of these popular self-teaching titles are now Barron’s E-Z Series. Brand-new cover designs reflect all new page layouts, which feature extensive two-color treatment, a fresh, modern typeface, and more graphic material than ever— charts, graphs, diagrams, instructive line illustrations, and where appropriate, amusing cartoons. Meanwhile, the quality of the books’ contents remains at least as high as ever. Barron’s E-Z books are self-help manuals focused to improve students’ grades in a wide variety of academic and practical subjects. For most subjects, the level of difficulty ranges between high school and college-101 standards. Although primarily designed as self-teaching manuals, these books are also preferred by many teachers as classroom supplements—and for some courses, as main textbooks. E-Z books review their subjects in detail, and feature both short quizzes and longer tests with answers to help students gauge their learning progress. Subject heads and key phrases are set in a second color as an easy reference aid. Barron’s E-Z French instructs students with little or no prior knowledge of the language in informal conversational French. They'll find true-to-life dialogues with translations, skill-building exercises, useful verb conjugation charts, explanations of grammatical terms, and many more language-learning features. Illustrations supplement the text and capture much of the spirit of contemporary France.

Download or read book Animots written by Matthew Senior and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest volume of Yale French Studies addresses French-inspired theoretical and philosophical concerns centered on animals and animality. Contributors from France, the United Kingdom, and North America discuss animal-related topics in the French philosophical and literary tradition, offering a wide range of perspectives on animals, ethics, and the future of animal studies. Essays question the reducibility of animal lives to rights discourse on the one hand and scientific empiricisms on the other, and examine whether and how the advent of the posthuman will affect the standing and the future of the nonhuman animal.
Book Synopsis The Animal That Therefore I Am by : Jacques Derrida
Download or read book The Animal That Therefore I Am written by Jacques Derrida and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The translated, complete text of Derrida’s 1997 ten-hour address, “The Autobiographical Animal,” focusing on the industrialized treatment of animals. The Animal That Therefore I Am is at once an affectionate look back over the multiple roles played by animals in Derrida’s work and a profound philosophical investigation and critique of the relegation of animal life that takes place as a result of the distinction?dating from Descartes?between man as thinking animal and every other living species. That starts with the very fact of the line of separation drawn between the human and the millions of other species that are reduced to a single “the animal.” Derrida finds that distinction, or versions of it, surfacing in thinkers as far apart as Descartes, Kant, Heidegger, Lacan, and Levinas, and he dedicates extended analyses to the question in the work of each of them. The book’s autobiographical theme intersects with its philosophical analysis through the figures of looking and nakedness, staged in terms of Derrida’s experience when his cat follows him into the bathroom in the morning. In a classic deconstructive reversal, Derrida asks what this animal sees and thinks when it sees this naked man. Yet the experiences of nakedness and shame also lead all the way back into the mythologies of “man’s dominion over the beasts” and trace a history of how man has systematically displaced onto the animal his own failings or bêtises. The Animal That Therefore I Am is at times a militant plea and indictment regarding, especially, the modern industrialized treatment of animals. However, Derrida cannot subscribe to a simplistic version of animal rights that fails to follow through, in all its implications, the questions and definitions of “life” to which he returned in much of his later work.
