Book Synopsis The Translation of Films, 1900-1950 by : Carol O'Sullivan
Download or read book The Translation of Films, 1900-1950 written by Carol O'Sullivan and published by Proceedings of the British Aca. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich collection of articles and essays by film historians, translation scholars, archivists, and curators presents film translation history as an exciting and timely area of research. It builds on the last twenty years of research into the history of dubbing and subtitling, but goes further, by showing how subtitling, dubbing, and other forms of audiovisual translation developed over the first fifty years of the twentieth century. This is the first book-length study, in any language, of the international history of audiovisual translation which includes silent cinema. Its scope covers national contexts both within Europe and beyond. It shows how audiovisual translation practices were closely tied to their commercial, technological and industrial contexts. The Translation of Films, 1900-1950 draws extensively on archival sources and expertise. In doing so it revisits and challenges some of the established narratives around film languages and the coming of sound. For instance, the volume shows how silent films, far from being straightforward to translate, went through a complex process of editing for international distribution. It also closely tracks the ferment of experiments in film translation during the transition to sound from 1927 to 1934 and later, as markets adjusted to the demands of synchronised film. The Translation of Films, 1900-1950 argues for a broader understanding of film translation: far from being limited to language transfer, it encompasses editing, localisation, censorship, paratextual framing, and other factors. It advocates for film translation to be considered as a crucial contribution not only to the worldwide circulation of films, but also to the art of cinema.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a clearing by the forest, a little girl befriends a bison. Each winter they meet, sit by the fire, and share stories or simply enjoy the silence together until it is time for the bison to rejoin his herd in the spring. Their bond deepens as they grow older and the years go by, but one winter her bison does not return. After searching for him in the woods, the little girl, now a grown-up, comes to understand that though her bison is gone, he will also always be with her. Gaya Wisniewski's evocative charcoal-and-ink illustrations, enriched by the gradual addition of blue watercolor, masterfully convey this tender, affecting story of friendship and understanding the passage of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "> Exhibition in EYE, Amsterdam, 14 December 2014 - 15 March 15 2015 > With great deal of unique visual footage, such as posters, correspondence, photographs, and film stills. Jean Desmet's Dream Factory: The Adventurous Years of Film (1907-1916) offers an inspiring picture of the early years of film. This new medium developed rapidly into a popular form of entertainment thanks to new technology, artistic ingenuity and creative entrepreneurship. The film industry could grow in part because of passionate businessmen like Jean Desmet (1875-1956), who rose from fairground showman to become one of the most important cinema exhibitors and film distributors in the Netherlands. This publication pays tribute to Jean Desmet the entrepreneur and pioneer, and especially to the films he screened. Films from the second decade of the last century surprise today's audiences with their original imaginative power, uninhibited vision and inventive use of film techniques. The visual refinement of many of these films makes them both artistic and modern. Jean Desmet's estate is preserved and accessible by the EYE Film museum. The Desmet Collection consists of more than 900 films, but also includes many posters, photographs and documents. Among the films are masterpieces considered lost for decades. The Desmet Collection is inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register."--Publisher's description.
