Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, of numerous references, is an encyclopedia of logic, metaphysics, ethics and theology and represents the history of Indian Philosophy of a particular period. A popular saying credits the author, Jayanta, with the reputation of being a master-scholar of Indian logic. No study of Indian logic can be considered to be complete without having recourse to this work. The main task of the author in this book is to defend the views of Vatsyayana as expressed in his Nyaya-bhasya on the sutras of Gautama against the criticisms offered by the adversaries. He has criticised the views not only of the Buddhists but also of the Grammarian bhartrhari and the Mimamsakas-Kumarila and Prabhakara. his condemnation of the Prabhakaras as the plagiarists who borrowed from the Buddhist show his intimate knowledge both of the Buddhists and the mimamsa ka schools. In his lengthy discussion on the pramanas in this volume, he has refuted the hypothesis of the Bhattas and the prabhakaras. Thus the book provides knowledge not only of the details of the Nyaya School but also of the systems of logic followed by the rival schools.
Book Synopsis Much Ado about Religion by : Jayanta Bhaṭṭa
Download or read book Much Ado about Religion written by Jayanta Bhaṭṭa and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This play satirizes various religions in Kashmir and their place in the politics of King Shankaravarman (883–902). The leading character is a young and dynamic orthodox graduate, whose career starts as a glorious campaign against the heretic Buddhists, Jains, and other antisocial sects. By the end of the play he realizes that the interests of the monarch do not encourage such inquisitional rigor. Unique in Sanskrit literature, Jayánta Bhatta's play, Much Ado About Religion, is a curious mixture of fiction and history, of scathing satire and intriguing philosophical argumentation. The play satirizes various religions in Kashmir and their place in the politics of King Shánkara·varman (883-902 CE). The leading character, Sankárshana, is a young and dynamic orthodox graduate of Vedic studies, whose career starts as a glorious campaign against the heretic Buddhists, Jains and other antisocial sects. Book Synopsis The Nyaya Theory of Knowledge by : Satischandra Chatterjee
Download or read book The Nyaya Theory of Knowledge written by Satischandra Chatterjee and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a system of realism, the Nyëya deserves special study to show that Idealism was not the only philosophical creed of ancient India. This book is an attempt to give a complete account of the Nyëya theory of knowledge in comparison with the rival theories of other systems, Indian and Western, and critical estimation of its worth. Though theories of knowledge of the Vedënta and other schools have been partially studied in this way by some, there has as yet been no such systematic, critical and comparative treatment of the Nyëya epistemology, The importance of such a study of Indian realistic theories of knowledge can scarcely be overrated in this modern age of Realism.

Book Synopsis The Advaita Vedānta of Brahma-siddhi by : Allen Wright Thrasher
Download or read book The Advaita Vedānta of Brahma-siddhi written by Allen Wright Thrasher and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brahma-siddhi, 'The Demonstration of Brahman' is Mandana Misra's largest work, his most important and the sole one dedicated as a whole to Vedanta. The topics occurring in the doctrine of this work which the present author intends to study here in this book are inter-related; they all have to deal with the nature and functioning of error, whether every-day error or the transcendental error, avidya, which makes us see the multiplicity of phenomena where there is nothing but the utter oneness of brahman. Thet also demonstrate the number of different sources upon which Mandana depended in erecting his own system. In spite of the number and variety of these sources Mandana created a system, the closed coherence of whose parts is a cause of admiration, even if one does not always accept his conclusions. Two appendices are also added to give a glimpse of Mandana Misra's date and his order of works. An exhaustive bibliography has been provided to facilitate the curiosity of readers. An index of important words has also been given.
