Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Movement in the Japanese Empire, Including Korea and Formosa: A Year Book for 1916; Fourteenth Annual Issue A thoughtful reviewer of a recent volume of the chris tian movement thought it significant that a book of this size is required to deal adequately with the spread of Christianity in Japan. Year by year the editors find it increasingly difficult to so condense the interesting material at hand as to confine the volume within its present limits. It is an occasion of deep regret that the limitations of space and the added cost of production has compelled us reluctantly to carry over to another year material for which we would have gladly found space within the present volume. It was the intention to include this year a section dealing with the history of medical work in Japan as well as its present development. But we are compelled to defer its publica tion until another year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Peking ceded Formosa to Japan in 1895, whereupon Japan became the first Asian power in modern times to possess a colony, and the island became a testing ground for imperial policies. For two centuries the Formosan Chinese had resisted authority imposed upon them by inefficient continental Chinese. Now, Tokyo extended to insular Formosa many organizing, modernizing measures characterizing Japan's own vigorous Meiji Revolution. During the next fifty years, as living standards rose to approach those of Japan proper, early leaderless Formosan resistance to alien rule developed into organized appeals for effective representation in local government and at Tokyo. With reversion to continental Chinese control at the end of World War II, Formosans expected to conserve and enhance gains made during the Japanese era. Bitter disappointment promptly led again to rebellious relations with the continent. The author, long resident in Formosa and exclusively concerned with Formosan affairs while in government service during and after World War II, is well qualified to comment upon Formosa's history and prospects. He concludes that the Japanese era left an ineradicable mark upon the island people, an understanding of which will illuminate developments when Peking later undertakes the formidable task of converting Formosa into a fully disciplined and integrated province of the People's Republic of China.

Book Synopsis The Japanese Wartime Empire, 1931-1945 by : Peter Duus
Download or read book The Japanese Wartime Empire, 1931-1945 written by Peter Duus and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book the editors complete the three-volume series on modern Japanese colonialism and imperialism that began with The Japanese Colonial Empire, 1895-1945 (Princeton, 1983) and The Japanese Informal Empire in China, 1895-1937 (Princeton, 1989). The Japanese military takeover in Manchuria between 1931 and 1932 was a critical turning point in East Asian history. It marked the first surge of Japanese aggression beyond the boundaries of its older colonial empire and set Japan on a collision course with China and Western colonial powers from 1937 through 1945. These essays seek to illuminate some of the more significant processes and institutions during the period when the empire was at war: the creation of a Japanese-dominated East Asian economic bloc centered in northeast Asia, the mobilization of human and physical resources in the older established areas of Japanese colonial rule, and the penetration and occupation of Southeast Asia. Introduced by Peter Duus, the volume contains four sections: Japan's Wartime Empire and the Formal Colonies (Carter J. Eckert and Wan-yao Chou), Japan's Wartime Empire and Northeast Asia (Louise Young, Y. Tak Matsusaka, Ramon H. Myers, and Takafusa Nakamura), Japan's Wartime Empire and Southeast Asia (Mark R. Peattie, E. Bruce Reynolds, and Ken'ichi Goto), and Japan's Wartime Empire in Other Perspectives (George Hicks, Hideo Kobayashi, and L. H. Gann).
