Book excerpt: This book discusses recent developments in electroluminescent (EL) displays, in particular thin-film EL displays, which are all-solid emissive displays with fast response, wide viewing angle, high resolution, wide operating temperature ranges and good display qualities. First, the characteristics of four types of EL devices are presented, and the physics of ac thin-film EL devices are detailed, including ideal models, measuring and evaluation methods, high-field electronic transport and properties of phosphor materials. The book emphasizes recent developments in phosphor materials for color thin-film EL devices based on ZnS, SrS, CaS and CaGa2S4, and multicolor thin-film EL panels in four-panel structures. Other important features discussed are drive methods and reliability issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of Research Study Group (RSG) 13 on "Human Engineering Evaluation on the Use of Colour in Electronic Displays," of Panel 8, "Defence Applications of Human and Biomedical Sciences," of the NATO Defence Research Group. RSG 13 was chaired by Heino Widdel (Germany) and consisted of Jeffrey Grossman (United States), Jean-Pierre Menu (France), Giampaolo Noja (Italy, point of contact), David Post (United States), and Jan Walraven (Netherlands). Initially, Christopher Gibson (United Kingdom) and Sharon McFaddon (Canada) participated also. Most of these representatives served previously on the NATO program committee that produced Proceedings of a Workshop on Colour Coded vs. Monochrome Displays (edited by Christopher Gibson and published by the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, England) in 1984. RSG 13 can be regarded as a descendent of that program committee. RSG 13 was formed in 1987 for the purpose of developing and distributing guidance regarding the use of color on electronic displays. During our first meeting, we discussed the fact that, although there is a tremendous amount of information available concerning color vision, color perception, colorimetry, and color displays-much of it relevant to display design-it is scattered across numerous texts, journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. We decided that we could fulfill the RSG's purpose best by producing a book that consolidates and summarizes this information, emphasizing those aspects that are most applicable to display design.

Book excerpt: Sixty years on from the end of the Pacific War, Japan on Display examines representations of the Meiji emperor, Mutsuhito (1852-1912) and his grandson the Showa emperor, Hirohito who was regarded as a symbol of the nation, in both war and peacetime. Much of this representation was aided by the phenomenon of photography. The introduction and development of photography in the nineteenth century coincided with the need to make Hirohito’s grandfather, the young Meiji Emperor, more visible. Photo books and albums became a popular format for presenting seemingly objective images of the monarch, reminding the Japanese of their proximity to the Emperor, and the imperial family. In the twentieth century, these 'national albums’ provided a visual record of wars fought in the name of the Emperor, while also documenting the reconstruction of Tokyo, scientific expeditions, and imperial tours. Drawing on archival documents, photographs, and sources in both Japanese and English, this book throws new light on the history of twentieth-century Japan and the central role of Hirohito. With Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War, the Emperor was transformed from wartime leader to peace-loving scientist. Japan on Display seeks to understand this reinvention of a more 'human’ Emperor and the role that photography played in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews comprehensively the technological, scientific, artistic and medical applications of liquid crystals. It starts with the basics of liquid crystals and covers electro-optical, thermo-optical, colour, polymeric, lyotropic, and scientific applications of liquid crystalline materials. It discusses the fabrication and operational principles of a full range of liquid crystal displays including dynamic scattering, twisted nematic, supertwisted nematic, dichroic, smectic A, ferroelectric, polymer dispersed, light valve, active matrix, etc., in detail. It also covers the emerging applications of liquid crystals such as optical computing, nonlinear optics, decorative and visual arts. The detailed chapters on classification, theory, chemical structure, physical properties and surface alignment of liquid crystals facilitate the basic understanding of the science behind LCDs and other uses of liquid crystals. The chapters on liquid crystal polymers and lyotropic liquid crystals, give deep insight into these areas. The potential uses and applications are also described in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Workshop on Electroluminescence (EL-88) was held at the Hotel Holiday, Tottori, Japan, October 11-14, 1988. This workshop was sponsored by the 125 Research Committee on Mutual Conversion between Light and Electricity, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, in cooperation with SID (Society for Infonnation Display) Japan Chapter, Tottori Prefecture, the Tot tori Industrial Technology Association, and the Foundation for Advancement of International Science (FAIS). The workshop EL-88 was a continuation of the series of international work shops held successively at Liege (Belgium) in 1980, Bad Stuer (DDR) in 1983, and at Wann Springs (Oregon, USA) in 1986. It brought together scientists and engi neers from universities and industry who shared a common interest in discussing electroluminescence and related topics. The number of participants reached 253; 49 from abroad (10 countries) and 204 from Japan. This is almost four times as many as in the previous workshop in 1986, reflecting the recent rapid development and progress of electroluminescence research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major changes taking place in technology have some of the greatest effect in the world of aviation. Yet, in an industry which started with the concept of 'open skies', each sector has traditionally developed on its own and adjusted to developments in other areas as and when required. The need for integration is particularly important as the skies become increasingly crowded. More intense commercialization dramatically increases the interlocking between technological developments and the size of the financial investments required. For maximum efficiency the aviation system thus has to develop as an integrated whole with a greater awareness of events in other sectors. This book is intended to meet this requirement by addressing the breadth and depth of the aviation system and looking at some areas where significant advances are happening. While following the processes of development, the reader will see where the results might lead in the new century. Its three parts concentrate on areas of great significance - in integration as well as in technological progress - especially for their impact on human and social aspects. The editor and the invited contributors are amongst the foremost experts, researchers and industry leaders in their fields in the global aviation community, many with hands-on experience of massive change. The intended readership includes those who are moving into management functions in air traffic management, airplane manufacturing and airline operations; in training centres, colleges and institutions.
