Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume on Japan was written nearly a century ago by an Englishman who had been living in the country for some time. Using a variety of Japanese and Japanese-published European journals and newspapers, he captures the country's opinion on a variety of matters, from politics to culture, religion to technology, constitution to revolution, during the years following the Meiji Restoration and Japan's movement towards modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007. At the turn of the twentieth century, the author spent three years in Japan, at the heart of what he saw as a revolution. The modernization of the Meiji era was well underway, but far from complete. All around him, Watson saw orientalism and feudalism jostling with the twentieth century, in strange juxtapositions that produced a melange that he found inspiring, disappointing and irritating but always interesting for, as he wrote, there had been no spectacle on earth like it since time began. While other observers of Japan wrote of the Old or the New Japan, or suggested that the transition from one to the other had been accomplished easily and gracefully, Watson set out to reveal all the contradictions, anachronisms, tragicomic consequences and peculiar manifestations of Meiji westernisation. His eye and pen are sharp, but his underlying concern is what the ultimate outcome of this enforced modernisation will be. The question always before him is - can a nation forget its origins, identity and culture? Watson prowls the material and immaterial world of Tokyo, metropolis of the revolution, alert for dissonance. The Japanese dress reform movement produces costumes of supreme inelegance; the simplicity of the Japanese home is disturbed by the discords of European 'innovations', the bathhouses are no longer mixed. As the book ends, Watson sees constitutional government in Japan losing ground – an intimation of the political events of the next half-century. This is a thought-provoking book, first for the unique account it gives of the contradictions and tensions beneath the surface of the accepted version of the Japanese modernisation narrative, and also for the questions Watson poses about the effect of westernisation of Japanese identity and nationality, as timely now as it was a century ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by a leading authority on Anglo-Japanese relations reconsiders the circumstances which led to the unlikely alliance of 1902 to 1922 between Britain, the leading world power of the day and Japan, an Asian, non-European nation which had only recently emerged from self-imposed isolation. Based on extensive original research the book goes beyond existing accounts which concentrate on high politics, strategy and simple assertions about the two countries’ similarities as island empires. It brings into the picture cultural factors, particularly the ways in which Japan was portrayed in Britain, and ambivalent British attitudes to race and supposed European superiority which were overcome but remained difficulties. It charts how the relationship developed as events unfolded, including Japan’s wars against China and Russia, and in addition looks at royal diplomacy, where the Japanese Court came eventually to be treated as a respected equal. Overall, the book provides a major reassessment of this important subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Meiji Era, of 1868-1912, British influence in Japan was stronger than that of any other foreign power. Although role models were sought from Englishmen and Scotsmen, whether diplomats, engineers, educators or philosophers, the first priority for the Japanese was to achieve a transfer of industrial and technical skills. As important customers, who brought good profits to British industry, the Japanese were accommodated when they stipulated on awarding a contract that their own people should work in office, shipyard or factory. Much new research material discovered in Japan, England and Scotland has enabled the detailed examination of a relationship - with Britain as Senior and Japan as Junior partner - which lasted until 1914. It was on these foundations that Japan was able subsequently to build a great industrial nation.

Book excerpt: This is an important document in the history of Japanese-American relations. In 2002, President Bush spoke of the great Japanese scholar and statesman Inazo Nitobe, who envisioned a future of friendship between the two nations. This book is one of the means by which Nitobe sought to bridge the Pacific. Writing before World War I, he presents a detailed account of Japan and the Japanese in terms easily understandable to western readers, emphasising points of similarity rather than difference, often citing the work of western historians and philosophers in order to explain Japanese practices, always searching for common aims and goals. He deals with the effect of the past on the present, national characteristics, religious beliefs, morals and moral ideals, education, economic conditions, Japan as coloniser, relations between the United States and Japan, and America’s influence in the Far East, concluding with the hope that wherever else war may break out, lasting peace would reign over the Pacific. In this he was disappointed, but the fact that Nitobe is cited today as the architect of Japanese-American friendship makes this volume essential reading for the historian.
