Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan as We Saw It Japan as we saw it is, I venture to think, a happy title for these brief sketches by my daughter, of our eight weeks' sojourn in the Mikado's Empire. They do not claim in any way to be a tourist's handbook. They are only word-photographs, somewhat loosely grouped together, of what we were permitted to see under the exceptionally favourable guidance of my son, the Church of England Bishop there, and of the impressions indelibly stamped on our'memory while passing through that fascinating land, and freely mingling with cultured Japanese society. And they must only be accepted as samples of countless things we did not see. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan as We Saw It In compiling this little volume for publication, its purpose should be understood as practical rather than literary. Many persons of moderate means and fond of travel desire to visit Japan, but are deterred from so doing by the lack of positive information as to the cost of making the journey and the methods by which it is made. The modes of travel, methods of living as travellers, and habits and peculiarities of the people herein given, are reproduced from the writer's journal without any attempt at literary polish, and are based on his own experiences. The expense is such as a man and wife desiring to see Japan under the most comfortable conditions must necessarily meet, when stopping at the best hotels or inns, travelling first class upon railways and steamships, and in other ways not attempting the close economy sometimes practised by travellers. The writer, with his wife, having devoted exactly four months to the trip, finds that - including cost of through tickets from Boston to Yokohama and return ($435 each), sleeping-cars, dining-cars, living expenses at hotels and inns, wines and cigars, entertainment of friends, railroad, steamship, and jinrikisha expenses, wages and transportation of Japanese attendant, donations to servants, and, in short, everything but articles purchased - the entire cost is under $2,000 gold; or, to be exact, $1,875.05. It should however be borne in mind that practically as much may be seen, and at less expense, by those who are content to accept more humble accommodations. A week had almost passed since the boat had sailed from Vancouver, and the extremely bad weather encountered until this afternoon had prevented all but the most hardened good sailors from penetrating from below. Now, however, the wind and sea had somewhat abated, the first ray of sun had brought the storm-tossed and sea-sick from their berths, and the broad decks were soon swarming with passengers of both sexes, whose faces and general demeanour expressed entire satisfaction at their restored liberty. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Japanese Year It requires no small amount of courage to attempt to add anything to the voluminous literature on Japan with which the world is already burdened. The number of foreigners who have lived in this country - be their stay ever so short - and have not tried to write something about it is not large, and it is quite a distinction to belong to their group. However, an Englishman residing in Japan really does find himself surrounded by sights and sounds both new and strange, and the present writer was much encouraged by reading in one of Carlyle's essays that "the stupidest man, if he will be brief in proportion, may fairly claim some hearing from us." This would almost seem to allow the present writer to enter in, and here is an account, which he has tried to make faithful and "brief in proportion," of intimate experiences among one of the most picturesque and interesting nations of the world. The writer has lived over three years in Japan, a time all too short for the development of a complete understanding of a people so different from ourselves, especially by one who understands so little of the language as he does. He is therefore anxious to avoid the appearance of posing as an authority on things Japanese, and seldom makes any attempt to be profound. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan and America: A Contrast This book is not written to exaggerate the prob lems or to alarm Americans. It is the sincere wish of the author that the problems find a peaceful solution and that the ocean which separates Japan from the mainland of America remain pacific in fact as well as in name. But a solution is not to be found until the problem is stated in definite terms, nor does it aid toward a better understand ing of the situation to give the Japanese credit for a sentiment they do not possess, and attribute to them a code of morality which is as strange to them as is hard kart to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Old Japan The writer, in this book, has endeavoured to tell the Story of Japan from the creation to the accession of the present Emperor, when Old Japan - the Japan of feudal ism and seclusion - may be said to have come to an end and a new nation to have been born, which was destined to startle the world by a wondrous display of military, legislative and industrial progress. There are many Histories of Japan by English or American writers, and in the works of Kaempfer, translated from the German - Dickson, Adams, Griffis and Murray abundant material will be found by those who desire to form more than a general acquaintance with the subject. Those who desire to extend their inquiries still further, to acquire an esoteric knowledge of special periods, personages, or great political or economic movements, will find a storehouse closely packed with golden treasures of information in the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan, every volume of which contains able monographs by scholarly experts who have investigated in Japan the varied subjects with which they deal. Above all, they will find the beliefs, held by the Japanese themselves, faithfully mirrored in the exact translations of native classics, which have been made by Satow, Aston, and Chamber lain, the three great English scholars, whose knowledge of the Japanese language and literature does not fall below that of the most accomplished Japanese literati. All these works, whether histories, monographs or trans lations, are for the serious student, rather than for the lay reader, who, without leisure for painstaking studies, may still desire to possess some knowledge of the inter esting mythology and history of a country that is now playing so great a part in the theatre of the world, that is bound to our own by close political and commercial ties. It has been the aim of the present writer to supply this deficiency and to provide a narrative, in logical sequence, of all the great periods in Japanese history, written in a style which will render its perusal no greater task than that of an ordinary novel, to tell, in fact, The Story of Japan throughout the long ages of the past, just as the novelist tells the story of his own heroes and their lives. An attempt has been already made to tell this story in an even more concise manner in a series of articles in the Nineteenth Century and After. It was the interest which, the writer found, was aroused by these articles among his own associates that tempted him to use the wealth of material that was at his disposal and his own knowledge to extend the articles into the present volume. During this interval the great Revolution, which has so profoundly modified the political condition and social life in Japan, took place. A continuation of the narrative, bringing the record down to the summer of 1873, is furnished by the editor of the English Edition.
