Book Synopsis The Politics of National Celebrations in the Arab Middle East by : Elie Podeh
Download or read book The Politics of National Celebrations in the Arab Middle East written by Elie Podeh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do countries celebrate defining religious moments or significant events in their history, and how and why do their leaders select certain events for commemoration and not others? This book is the first systematic study of the role of celebrations and public holidays in the Arab Middle East from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the present. By tracing the history of the modern nation-state through successive generations, the book shows how Arab rulers have used public holidays as a means of establishing their legitimacy and, more broadly, a sense of national identity. Most recently, some states have attempted to nationalize religious festivals in the face of the Islamic revival. With its many illustrations and copious examples from across the region, the book offers an alternative perspective on the history and politics of the Middle East.

Book Synopsis The Shah’s Imperial Celebrations of 1971 by : Robert Steele
Download or read book The Shah’s Imperial Celebrations of 1971 written by Robert Steele and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1971 Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, held a celebration to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great. Dozens of heads of state descended on Persepolis for these Celebrations, where they were regaled to sumptuous banquets and entertainment. Critical journalists in Western Europe and North America lambasted the Shah for holding such a decadent event while many of his people lived in poverty. Due to the overwhelmingly negative press at the time, the event is still today widely remembered as a catastrophic failure. It is even said by many to have sparked the unrest that eventually led to the revolution and the Shah's downfall in 1979. In this first comprehensive academic study of the 2500th Anniversary Celebrations, Robert Steele looks beyond the pomp and splendour to examine the events' origins, the goals the organisers set out to achieve with them and the extent to which these goals were accomplished. The book seeks to place the Celebrations in the context of the Shah's rise, rather than his fall, uncovering the unparalleled international cultural and scholarly operation that was spurred by the Iranian regime for the occasion, exploring the effects the event had on Iran's tourism industry and questioning narratives of the event's cost.

Book Synopsis HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS and Much More by : Pat Morrell-Donnelly
Download or read book HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS and Much More written by Pat Morrell-Donnelly and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS and Much More” is Pat Morrell-Donnelly’s tenth (10th) book to publish. It has been said “Don’t look back if you don’t want to go that way.” This is true when looking back at mistakes and challenges one has faced. But sometimes it is good to reflect on the past particularly regarding special holidays, events and happy times. “Precious memories how they linger.” It is sometimes helpful to reminisce and remember loved ones and friends, many of whom are no longer with us. Recalling special Christmas’s, Thanksgiving dinners and get-together's with family and friends can be good for the soul. Nostalgia 2 point O. It is good to spend a few moments in thought regarding these joy-filled celebrations, special times and memorable events spent with loved ones. “HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS and Much More” speaks to just those things, those celebrations and events so precious to recall. This book contains 200 poems Pat has written through the eighties, nineties, two thousand and on about different holidays and celebrations. After some of the sets of poems there are pictures depicting the occasion, and pictures of Pat’s table settings representing each holiday or event. Some poems also convey what was going on in the country, to some extent, particularly the years about which her poem was written. Also some poems tell about what was going on in Pat’s life at that particular time. To find all of the New Year’s poems in one place, covering so much of the past history, is quite unusual and unique. Pat’s first book to publish “The Climb Up Life’s Mountain” was published in 2009 when Pat was eighty years of age. Her ninth book “All About Love” was published July 2023. Pat published her first nine books in fifteen years. Pat has written over eighteen (1800) hundred poems. Pat shares many of her life’s experiences through her poetry. Thoughts wake her up in the night and she scribbles those thoughts, or poem, on a note pad deciphering the next morning. She has written many poems while under the hair dryer. Pat’s aim is to get her poems out of her computer into books so they will not be lost forever when she is no longer here. At age ninety-four only the Good Lord knows when the final page of her “Life’s Book” will be written and finished. Pat is thankful for the “gift” God has given her to write poetry. If it lifts some ones spirit, or takes them away for a few minutes from worldly cares, it will have been worth her time publishing this book.

With vivid, glowing paintings, this unique picture book offers a poetic lesson about a plant's growth cycle and about the produce industry. Book Synopsis Holidays and Celebrations in Colonial America by : Russell Roberts
Download or read book Holidays and Celebrations in Colonial America written by Russell Roberts and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For people living in the American colonies, a holiday was a rare thing indeed. Life in colonial times was difficult, and there was little time available for leisure activities like holidays and celebrations. Some of the holidays that the colonists did celebrate, such as Pinkster and Simnel Sunday, have disappeared from the nation's calendar. Others, however, such as New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day, have evolved into widely celebrated events. The colonists would also gather for weddings, funerals, and bees, at which they would help one another build a house, peel apples, or haul away stones. The Building America series tells the story of the early years in which Europeans colonized America and then struggled to make the land an independent nation. Holidays and Celebrations in Colonial America highlights the lighter side of life not only for the colonists, but also for some of the Native American peoples of that era.
