Book Synopsis Bill Bright and Campus Crusade for Christ by : John G. Turner
Download or read book Bill Bright and Campus Crusade for Christ written by John G. Turner and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as a local college ministry in 1951, Campus Crusade for Christ has become one of the world's largest evangelical organizations, today boasting an annual budget of more than $500 million. Nondenominational organizations like Campus Crusade account for much of modern evangelicalism's dynamism and adaptation to mainstream American culture. Despite the importance of these ''parachurch'' organizations, says John Turner, historians have largely ignored them. Turner offers an accessible and colorful history of Campus Crusade and its founder, Bill Bright, whose marketing and fund-raising acumen transformed the organization into an international evangelical empire. Drawing on archival materials and more than one hundred interviews, Turner challenges the dominant narrative of the secularization of higher education, showing how Campus Crusade helped reestablish evangelical Christianity as a visible subculture on American campuses Beyond the campus, Bright expanded evangelicalism's influence in the worlds of business and politics. As Turner demonstrates, the story of Campus Crusade reflects the halting movement of evangelicalism into mainstream American society: its awkward marriage with conservative politics, its hesitancy over gender roles and sexuality, and its growing affluence. JOHN G. TURNER is assistant professor of history at the University of South Alabama.

Book Synopsis No Nails, No Lumber by : Jeffrey Head
Download or read book No Nails, No Lumber written by Jeffrey Head and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a house constructed in less than forty-eight hours, without using lumber or nails, that is more resistant to fire, earthquakes, and hurricanes than any traditionally built structure. This may sound like the latest development in prefab housing or green architecture, but the design dates back to 1941 when architect Wallace Neff (1895–1982) developed Airform construction as a solution to the global housing crisis. Best known for his elegant Spanish Colonial–revival estates in Southern California, Neff had a private passion for his dome-shaped "bubble houses" made of reinforced concrete cast in position over an inflatable balloon. No Nails, No Lumber shows the beauty and versatility of Neff's design in new and vintage photography, previously unpublished illustrations, and archival material and ephemera.
Book Synopsis Spiritual Dimensions in the Music of Edmund Rubbra by : Lucinda Cradduck
Download or read book Spiritual Dimensions in the Music of Edmund Rubbra written by Lucinda Cradduck and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Rubbra’s music has given him a reputation as a ‘spiritual’ composer, who had an interest in Eastern thought, and a mid-life conversion to Roman Catholicism. This book takes a wide and detailed view of ‘spiritual’ dimensions or strands that were important in his life, positioning them both biographically and within the context of contemporaneous English culture. It proceeds to interpret through detailed analysis the ways these spiritual aspects are reflected in specific compositions. Thematical treatment of these spiritual issues, touching on Theosophy, dance, Eastern religions and thought, nature, the evolutionary theory of Teilhard de Chardin and the Christ figure, presents a multi-faceted view of Rubbra’s life and music. Its contribution to a scholarly re-evaluation of his place within twentieth-century British music and culture engages and meshes with several areas of current scholarly research in the arts and humanities, including academic interest in Theosophy, modernism and the arts, experimental dance and the Indian cultural renaissance and East–West musical interactions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also adds to a burgeoning body of writings on music and spirituality, fuelled by the popularity of later twentieth-century and contemporary composers who make more overt spiritual references in their music.
