Book Synopsis Masters and Servants in English Renaissance Drama and Culture by : M. Burnett
Download or read book Masters and Servants in English Renaissance Drama and Culture written by M. Burnett and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon archival material as well as the drama, popular verse and pamphlets, this book reads representations of masters and servants in relation to key Renaissance preoccupations. Apprentices, journeymen, male domestic servants, maidservants and stewards, Burnett argues, were deployed in literary texts to address questions about the exercise of power, social change and the threat of economic upheaval. In this way, writers were instrumental in creating servant 'cultures', and spaces within which forms of political resistance could be realized.
Book Synopsis The Experience of Domestic Service for Women in Early Modern London by : Paula Humfrey
Download or read book The Experience of Domestic Service for Women in Early Modern London written by Paula Humfrey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century texts presented here describe female servants' experiences of work in early modern London. Domestics' court depositions offer qualitative evidence that female servants were an important support of emergent capitalism in the early modern metropolis. Exposed here are the contractual underpinnings of domestic service for women; the mobility that domestic servants enjoyed; and the concern that this mobility generated in the authorities. Paid domestic work has traditionally been regarded by historians simply as a pre-marital phase of women's lives. In fact, the depositions in this volume show that service was a prototypical form of female wage labour. While some women left service once they married, others relied on domestic positions as an avenue to generating income as life-long single women, as married women, and as widows. Even though they usually lived in poverty, labouring women who worked as servants in London had considerably more agency than has earlier been recognized. Female servants who deposed before London ecclesiastical and parish courts three centuries ago were mostly non-literate. Strikingly, their individual voices are clear and distinct as they present information about their working and personal circumstances.

Book Synopsis A Saint in Old Lyme by : Elizabeth Brown
Download or read book A Saint in Old Lyme written by Elizabeth Brown and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a visionary or prophet, one of God’s chosen, in a digital era becoming increasingly secular? Many people are diagnosed mentally ill and become hospitalized or homeless. Could some of these individuals prophesying on the streets be misunderstood? Saints from the past, prior to their canonization, such as Saint Faustina, were considered deluded. All but one of Jesus’ disciples were martyred. The folie a deux hypothesis (shared psychosis) has been used to discount Jesus’ resurrection. In 1960, Jane Wright, a ten-year-old girl, during a summer stay in Old Lyme, drowned in the creek and suffered from a near death experience. She claimed she was saved to save others. When one of her miracles hit the news, Jane Wright, or the “Guardian Angel” as she was referred to in the Old Lyme Gazette, went public. After Jane’s death, fifty years later, ninety-year-old Jennie Wright took on her final divine endeavor, an appeal to Bishop Monroe regarding the sainthood of her best friend and sister-in-law, Jane Wright. Jennie recounted miracles, a “resurrection” and healing, along with an account of stigmata and an exorcism. In an epistolatory format, A Saint in Old Lyme explores the embattled soul of Jane Wright and her journey into the dark night.

Book excerpt: Frank Lloyd Wright was the most influential architect of the twentieth century?and a rogue genius whose life was a wild ride. Wright routinely ignored unpaid bills, clients? wishes, budget constraints. Only his creative vision mattered to him. That vision transformed the way we live, sweeping aside the Victorian home and creating a uniquely American architecture exemplified by his Prairie Style houses. Wright built hotels, churches, and offices, too, incorporating endless innovations in techniques and materials. Ideas poured out of him throughout his long career; he called it ?shaking the design out of my sleeve.? Jan Adkins?s fascinating biography of this compelling, infuriating, largerthan- life figure will change the way every reader looks at architecture.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race, Representation & Photography in 19th-Century Memphis: from Slavery to Jim Crow presents a rich interpretation of African American visual culture. Using Victorian era photographs, engravings, and pictorial illustrations from local and national archives, this unique study examines intersections of race and image within the context of early African American communities. It emphasizes black agency, looking at how African Americans in Memphis manipulated the power of photography in the creation of free identities. Blacks are at the center of a study that brings to light how wide-ranging practices of photography were linked to racialized experiences in the American south following the Civil War. Jenkins' book connects the social history of photography with the fields of visual culture, art history, southern studies, gender, and critical race studies.

Book Synopsis Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows by : Sue Appleby
Download or read book Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows written by Sue Appleby and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Cornwall has for centuries been the source of migrants to all parts of the world. This has generated a broad literature on Cornish emigration and the Cornish abroad, much of it concentrated on the better-known destinations of the USA, Australia, and South Africa; related to the international mining industry of the 19th century; and dominated by men and their stories. Appleby breaks the mould by examining the lives of female indentured servants, wives of mariners, miners, and missionaries, and ‘ladies of quality’, who, for many different reasons, spent time in the Caribbean. There has been a gathering tide of research and literature into the lives of Cornish women in recent years but, so far, less work has concentrated on the women of the Cornish diaspora, so this new book is a very welcome addition to that literature.” Dr Lesley Trotter, Honorary Research Fellow, Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter. Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows is the first book to examine the lives of Cornish women who left their homes to spend time in the Caribbean colonies.
