Book Synopsis Jane and Her Gentlemen by : Audrey Hawkridge
Download or read book Jane and Her Gentlemen written by Audrey Hawkridge and published by Peter Owen Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The acclaimed novelist Jane Austen, who died at the age of forty-one in 1817, is one of the most celebrated spinsters in English literary history. However, she was much more worldly than many have given her credit for and she was never short of suitors and male friends." "In this absorbing study, Audrey Hawkridge discusses the men associated with the writer - including a mysterious suitor whom Jane developed a strong attachment for in her mid-twenties - to discover her feelings for them, mainly as expressed in those surviving letters to her sister Cassandra that her sibling did not feel the need to censor. The book also considers how these associations influenced the author's life and the depiction of her male characters in her fiction. In addition, Audrey Hawkridge looks in detail at Jane's relationships with her brothers, father and other male family members and friends and how - unlike many of her contemporaries - her preference for living and working quietly in the country was more important to her than the idea of marriage without love."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. When the court visits Wolf Hall, the Seymour ancestral manor, Jane has the perfect opportunity to shine: her diligence, efficiency and newfound poise are sure to finally attract a suitor. Meanwhile, King Henry VIII is 45 and increasingly desperate for an heir. He changed his country's religion to leave his first wife, a princess of Spain, for Anne Boleyn -- but she too has failed to provide a son. As Henry begins to fear he is cursed, Jane Seymour's honesty and innocence conjure in him the hope of redemption. Thomas Cromwell, an ambitious clerk whose political prowess keeps the King's changing desires satisfied, sees in Jane Seymour the perfect answer to the unrest threatening England: he engineers the plot that ends with Jane becoming the King's third wife. For Jane, who believes herself virtuous and her actions justified, miscarriages early in her marriage shake her confidence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winch has written the first full-length biography of James Forten, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free black family in 1766, Forten served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810 he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Soon after Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia's black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. Especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, he served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. His family were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina's Sea Islands during the Civil War. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in the pantheon of African Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.
