Book Synopsis From Memory to Marble by : Elizabeth Rankin
Download or read book From Memory to Marble written by Elizabeth Rankin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, the 92-metre frieze of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, one of the largest historical narratives in marble, has been made the subject of a book. The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the 'Great Trek' (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Conceptualising the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The book considers the active role the Monument played in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and the development of apartheid, as well as its place in post-apartheid heritage. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze, through all the stages of its design, to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble from Monte Altissimo, up to its final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it is depicted. The second volume expands on the first, by investigating each of the twenty-seven scenes of the frieze in depth, providing new insights into not only the frieze, but also South Africa’s history. François van Schalkwyk of African Minds, co-publisher with De Gruyter writes: From Memory to Marble is an open access monograph in the true sense of the word. Both volumes of the digital version of the book are available in full and free of charge from the date of publication. This approach to publishing democratises access to the latest scholarly publications across the globe. At the same time, a book such as From Memory to Marble, with its unique and exquisite photographs of the frieze as well as its wealth of reproduced archival materials, demands reception of a more traditional kind, that is, on the printed page. For this reason, the book is likewise available in print as two separate volumes. The printed and digital books should not be seen as separate incarnations; each brings its own advantages, working together to extend the reach and utility of From Memory to Marble to a range of interested readers.

Book Synopsis The Economic History of Colonialism by : Leigh Gardner
Download or read book The Economic History of Colonialism written by Leigh Gardner and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about the origins and effects of European rule in the non-European world have animated the field of economic history since the 1850s. This pioneering text provides a concise and accessible resource that introduces key readings, builds connections between ideas and helps students to develop informed views of colonialism as a force in shaping the modern world. With special reference to European colonialism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in both Asia and Africa, this book: • critically reviews the literature on colonialism and economic growth; • covers a range of different methods of analysis; • offers a comparative approach, as opposed to a collection of regional histories, deftly weaving together different themes. With debates around globalization, migration, global finance and environmental change intensifying, this authoritative account of the relationship between colonialism and economic development makes an invaluable contribution to several distinct literatures in economic history.
Book Synopsis Transnational Lives by : Desley Deacon
Download or read book Transnational Lives written by Desley Deacon and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationality has been determined by complex combinations of birthplace, language, residence, citizenship, sex, ethnic identity, racial classification and allegiance. But human lives continually elude official classifications. The transnationalism of ordinary lives threatens the stability of national identity and unsettles the framework of national histories and biography. Transnational Lives takes mobility, not nation, as its frame, and captures a rich array of lives, from the elite to the subaltern, that have crossed national, racial and cartographic boundaries. Spanning lived experience form the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, the collection reminds us that mobility has been crucial to a modernizing world. The structures of colonialism, slavery and racism, globalizing economies, higher education, professional training, political upheaval, mixed marriages, and cultural industries including film and theatre have all contributed or lives that transcend or subvert the national.
Download or read book Joseph Chamberlain written by I. Cawood and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winston Churchill described Joseph Chamberlain as 'the man who made the weather' for twenty years in British politics between the 1880s and the 1900s. This volume contains contributions on every aspect of Chamberlain's career, including international and cultural perspectives hitherto ignored by his many biographers. It breaks his career into three aspects: his career as an international statesman, defender of British interests and champion of imperial federation; his role as a national leader, opposing Gladstone's crusade for Irish home rule by forming an alliance with the Conservatives, campaigning for social reform and finally advocating a protectionist economic policy to promote British business; and the aspect for which he is still celebrated in his adopted city, as the provider of sanitation, gas lighting, clean water and cultural achievement for Birmingham – a model of civic regeneration that still inspires modern politicians such as Michael Heseltine, Tristram Hunt and David Willetts.
