Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Waldenström (1906-1996) was the leading Swedish internist of the twentieth century. The first chapter of the book presents his remarkable family including five generations of physicians. Born in Stockholm, we follow JW to medical school at Uppsala University during 1924–33. In 1934–5, he spent a year in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Hans Fischer in Munich. In 1937, he defended a landmark thesis on acute intermittent porphyria. As “Docent” (assistant professor) in Uppsala, he discovered two new diseases in 1943. In 1944–5, he spent 7 months in the US commissioned by the Swedish Health Board. This started friendships with leading colleagues and scientists. With time, JW fostered a worldwide network of contacts and became a most influential international star. But this was just the beginning. The book follows Waldenström's remarkable career including his description of chronic active hepatitis as a new disease, his introduction of nuclear medicine in Sweden, his pioneering of the concept of the concept of poly- and monoclonal gammopathies, and many more highly significant achievements. His legacy is emphasized by Waldenström lectures, Waldenström Prizes, and by the International Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, IWMF, and the Bing Center for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia at the Dana Farber Institute of Cancer Institute of the Harvard University in Boston. And now, not least, by this comprehensive biography.

It represents the efforts of physicians, scientists and patients, all around the world, to better understand and cure this rare disease. Considerable advances in the diagnosis, treatment indications, response criteria, prognostic factors and treatment options have been made since Dr Jan Waldenström first reported this “new syndrome“ 70 years ago. Particularly instrumental in advancing of our understanding of WM have been the eight international workshops devoted to this disease. New, exciting molecular data have recently been reported, allowing us to revisit the oncogenic events leading to WM B-cell proliferation and to use newly available compounds targeting oncogenic pathways.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the knowledge of how renal damage occurs in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias / myeloma has substantially increased. For the first time, this publication brings together issues relating to the diagnosis and pathogenesis of these disorders, as well as a summary of advances achieved in the treatment and management of patients. Several chapters are devoted to various glomerulopathies associated with deposition of immunoglobulin light and heavy chains, including those associated with amyloidosis. The sequential events are pointed out, crucial steps and key molecules open to modulation or control are delineated, and therapeutic advances are highlighted. Although the emphasis is on the management of cases with renal involvement, a distinct focus on the diseases as a whole and their impact on patients' general health and prognosis has been maintained throughout the discussions. Using a translational approach to renal manifestations in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias / myelomas, this publication conveys a comprehensive state-of-the-art view of the subject. It is aimed at practicing renal pathologists, nephrologists, internists and hematologists, as well as at trainees and scientists working in these specialties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade there has been an enormous increase in knowledge of multiple myeloma and related disorders, reflected in the publication of more than 5000 articles on the subject in scientific journals. Much of this has come about as new technologies have made it possible to refine studies on chromosomes and genes and to gain information about gene expression. It is therefore highly appropriate that this new comprehensive reference should appear at this time. The book covers the whole field of multiple myeloma, and also related diseases such as Waldemstr&öm&’s macroglobulinaemia, and incorporates both the basic science underlying the diseases and their clinical management. Each chapter has been written to &’stand alone&’, allowing the reader to dip into a particular subject and find information quickly without the need to browse through multiple chapters. In addition to the developments described above, all of which are considered here, many other approaches to targeted therapy are reviewed.
