Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from James Freeman Clarke, 1892: Autobiography, Diary and Correspondence My father, Samuel Clarke, was an only child. His fa ther, Samuel Clarke, had one sister (hepzibah Clarke, afterward Mrs. Swan), but no brother. Both were born in Boston. My great-grandfather, Barnabas Clarke, was born in Harwich, on Cape Cod, and was for some years a shipmaster. Afterward he became a merchant in Boston, marrying Hepzibah Barrett in 1748. Barnabas Clarke was a lineal descendant of Thomas Clarke, who is reported, by what Thacher calls a well received tradition in Plymouth, to have been the mate of the Mayflower, and the first who landed on Clarke's Island in Plymouth harbor. If so, he returned to England with the vessel, for he came over as a settler in the Anne, in July, 1623. He lived in Plymouth, Har wich, and Boston. He died in Plymouth, aged ninety eight, in the year 1697, and his grave and gravestone may be seen on the summit of Burying-ground Hill. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rise and demise of the psychology of religion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and the United States. It considers the formation of the psychology of religion as an international movement, an enterprise whose goal was to refashion the science of religion at the turn of the century. Drawing on published sources and archival accounts, the chapters engage with the work of notable figures including William James, C.G. Jung, and Pierre Janet, placing it alongside lesser-known practitioners such as Ernest Murisier, James Henry Leuba, James Pratt, and George Albert Coe. In addition to probing the intellectual background and professional context for the emergence of this sub-discipline, the book examines the development of key concepts and methodologies among psychologists of religion and offers arguments both for the rise of the discipline as well as for its demise in the early decades of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: A dramatic retelling of the story of the Transcendentalists, revealing them not as isolated authors but as a community of social activists who shaped progressive American values. Conflagration illuminates the connections between key members of the Transcendentalist circle—including James Freeman Clarke, Elizabeth Peabody, Caroline Healey Dall, Elizabeth Stanton, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Theodore Parker, and Margaret Fuller—who created a community dedicated to radical social activism. These authors and activists laid the groundwork for democratic and progressive religion in America. In the tumultuous decades before and immediately after the Civil War, the Transcendentalists changed nineteenth-century America, leading what Theodore Parker called “a Second American Revolution.” They instigated lasting change in American society, not only through their literary achievements but also through their activism: transcendentalists fought for the abolition of slavery, democratically governed churches, equal rights for women, and against the dehumanizing effects of brutal economic competition and growing social inequality. The Transcendentalists’ passion for social equality stemmed from their belief in spiritual friendship—transcending differences in social situation, gender, class, theology, and race. Together, their fight for justice changed the American sociopolitical landscape. They understood that none of us can ever fulfill our own moral and spiritual potential unless we care about the full spiritual and moral flourishing of others.
